What happens when a ClimateTech founder stops pitching and starts listening?

After three days at Panathēnea 2026, we sat down with Iosif Koutsoumbidis, FCCA, MSc, MBA, Co-Founder of APIRA, to talk about innovation, international growth and the next chapter for the German startup.

APIRA is developing patented autonomous wildfire protection systems designed to protect homes and buildings. The company was one of only four startups selected by the German Hellenic Chamber of Industry and Commerce AHK Greece to join the German Delegation at Panathēnea 2026.

From conversations with German industry representatives to a live panel on scaling startups internationally, the Athens experience offered more than visibility. It created space for new perspectives, meaningful connections, and strategic reflection.

An interview with Iosif Koutsoumpidis, Co-Founder of APIRA

APIRA, the German ClimateTech startup developing patented autonomous wildfire protection systems for homes and buildings, was one of only four startups selected by the German-Hellenic Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Greece) to join the German Delegation at Panathēnea 2026.

Between a networking briefing hosted with German industry representatives and a live panel on scaling startups abroad, co-founder Iosif Koutsoumpidis spent three days doing something rarer than pitching: listening. We sat down with him after the festival to talk about what APIRA actually builds, what changed for him in Athens, and where the company goes from here.

Fires Taught Us How To Be Prepared, Panathēnea Gave Us New Perspectives | Apira - Wildfire protection for homes APIRA, the company behind autonomous wildfire protection for homes, was one of only four startups selected by the German Hellenic Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Greece) to join the German Delegation at Panathēnea 2026.

A great second day at PANATHĒNEA 2026. It was an honour to represent APIRA, a German ClimateTech startup developing autonomous wildfire protection solutions, at the "Scale Abroad: Navigating Germany & the EU" event organized by the German-Hellenic Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Greece) at the Goethe-Institut Athens.

We are particularly proud that APIRA was one of only four startups selected by AHK Greece to participate in the German Delegation at PANATHĒNEA 2026.

As part of the program, I had the opportunity to present APIRA's wildfire protection solution and participate in the panel discussion "Get Experience. Get It Right. Challenges and Opportunities from a Startup's Point of View" together with Dr. Alejandro Rojas Fernandez, under the moderation of Dr. Spyros Arsenis from the National Bank of Greece.

Beyond the panel discussion, we were pleased to showcase APIRA through presentations and informational material shared with participants throughout the event. The strong interest, numerous questions, and engaging discussions around wildfire resilience and climate adaptation confirmed the growing importance of these challenges across Europe.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Ilja Nothnagel, Michaela Balis, Zoi Baltzi, and Kaliopi Klaraki from AHK Greece for the excellent organization and for creating such a valuable platform that connects startups, investors, industry, and innovation stakeholders.

It was also a pleasure to engage with the speakers and moderators of the other thematic sessions, including Yorgos Mousmoulas, Anne Nijenhuis, Sarah Wurzer, Prof. Dr. Kristina Wanieck, Dr. Panteleimon Panagiotou and Dora Trachana, as well as with Dr. Alejandro Rojas Fernandez and Dr. Spyros Arsenis during our own panel discussion.

The first day of PANATHĒNEA 2026 began with a Networking Briefing hosted by the German-Hellenic Chamber of Industry and Commerce — AHK Greece at its offices in Athens, bringing together members of the German Delegation and key representatives of the German business and innovation ecosystem in Greece.

We are particularly proud that APIRA was one of only four startups selected by AHK Greece to participate in the German Delegation, alongside leading research, innovation, and technology organizations from Germany.
The meeting focused on the Greek startup and innovation ecosystem, technology transfer opportunities, and future collaborations between Germany and Greece.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Ilja Nothnagel, Michaela Balis, Zoi Baltzi, and Kaliopi Klaraki from AHK Greece for the excellent organization and warm hospitality.

It was a privilege to exchange views with Dimitrios Anagnostakis of Boehringer Ingelheim Hellas and Vice President of the Board of Directors of AHK Greece, Dionysios Papadopoulos of Siemens Healthineers Hellas and Member of the Board of Directors of AHK Greece, and Frank Werner from the German Embassy in Athens. Their presence highlighted the strong commitment of German industry and institutions to strengthening innovation and business ties between Germany and Greece.

It was also a pleasure to meet fellow delegates Dr. Panteleimon Panagiotou, Dr. Alejandro Rojas Fernandez, Dr. Sebastian Winkler, Charis Kosmas, Sarah Wurzer, and Prof. Dr. Kristina Wanieck, representing organizations active in biotechnology, advanced materials, ClimateTech, space technology, research, and innovation ecosystems.

Looking forward to the collaborations, conversations, and opportunities that may emerge from this outstanding initiative.

Panathēnea brought to Athens people from the worlds of technology, entrepreneurship, science, and innovation. At Zappeion, in an environment filled with ideas, conversations, and meaningful encounters, we had the opportunity to connect with people who are shaping today’s business and technology landscape.

Among them was Markus Villig, Founder and CEO of Bolt, one of Europe’s most recognizable mobility companies and an important player in the international mobility market.

For APIRA, participating in events like Panathēnea is a way to listen to change as it happens. To connect with people who think ahead. To recognize the opportunities that emerge when technology meets business insight.

Panathēnea was a reminder that Athens can become an international meeting point for ideas with real perspective.

At Panathēnea, with Konstantinos Daskalakis, the renowned Greek professor at MIT, shortly after his participation in the Fireside Chat on May 29, during the second day of the event.

The presence of people like Konstantinos Daskalakis reminds us that technology is not only about tools, algorithms, or speed. It is also about thinking. Deep knowledge. Ethical responsibility. Human direction.

During Panathēnea, Athens became a vibrant meeting point for people who build, research, invest, create, and open new paths. For APIRA, meetings like this are particularly important. They bring us closer to conversations that not only observe the future but also actively participate in shaping it.
