Add one of these tours to your Berlin itinerary, and your trip will be much more memorable. These tours give you context to better understand Berlin, whether it’s the history or culture or a little of both.

As someone who’s been living in Berlin for 11+ years, my top picks for tours in berlin are Berliner Unterwelten tours, Tempelhof airport tours, and food tours.

Check out the link in the comments for links to all of these tours, and save this post for when you plan your trip to Berlin.

3 things you need to do before your trip to Berlin to avoid disappointment:

1. Book the free Reichstag Building audio guide tour 1-2 months ahead. It books up!

2. Book a Berliner Unterwelten tour 30 days ahead. Excellent WWII and Cold War tours. Since they’re popular and smaller groups, they can fill up.

3. Plan your Berlin itinerary around Sundays and Mondays. On Sundays, retail and grocery stores are closed. On Mondays, many museums and other attractions are closed.

Berliner Mauerweg day 5 in my series where I show you what it’s like to walk the entire 160km trail where the Berlin Wall once stood.

This day I started at the Schönholz Sbahn station. After a few minutes on unremarkable streets, I turned onto a path that parallels the Sbahn tracks. It is mostly lined with trees for a few kilometers, so even though it’s still in the city, it felt like I was away from the chaos.

I walked past some industrial buildings and then apartment buildings. And eventually I ended my walk for the day at the Rosenthal Nord tram stop.

Distance walked: 5.7km

Today marks the 36th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. You can still find many pieces and full sections of the Wall all around the city, and the area where the Wall once stood is now a cycling and hiking trail that stretches 160km (100 miles) around what was once West Berlin.

I've hiked the whole thing, and it's super interesting to go from city to countryside and back again. I might have to do the whole thing again at some point.

Here are some photos of the Berlin Wall remains as well as some sections of the trail.

Saturday is a great day for markets in Berlin. Fresh fruits and veggies from local farmers, meats, cheeses, flowers, spices, bread, and so much more. There’s usually several stalls where you can get lunch too. And lots of non food items. I especially like Boxhagener Platz in Friedrichshain.
