The Eyes of the Skin

The exhibition presents a selection of works by teachers, students and recent graduates from three sculpture studios of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Its concept is inspired by a book of the same name by the architect Juhani Pallasmaa which addresses the perception of space in connection with our corporeality, with an emphasis on unfocused vision and tactility. The relationship to corporeality and sensuality is what the works by contemporary male and female artists across generations in a wide range of individual expressions have in common. Works that relate to corporeality not only through figures, but also through plasticity, proportional relationships, sensitivity to matter, or the organic nature of transformation of matter, have been chosen for the bastion’s impressive space with its open horizon above the Nusle Valley. Several stories touching on existential, social, and environmental themes thus unfold on the terraces of the bastion. The semantic layers of individual works addressing the issues of memory, fictional history, personal mythology, archetypes and symbols assume a special intensity and gravity in the historically charged environment of the bastion, restoring a sense of rootedness in the time and space continuity.

Přemysl Otakar II Square in Klatovy** stone, concrete, iron, wood

An cca 8,5-meter-high column is supported by three different stones. They differ not only in size and material but also in their history. The largest granite one comes from the monument to Antonín Zápotocký, the second communist president of Czechoslovakia, created by Jan Hána (who was, among other things, the last rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague before 1989), and it originally stood right here. After 1989, the bronze statue was removed, transported to the gallery at Klenová, and symbolically buried there. The pedestal then remained in the middle of this granite square for a long time.
