Wrapping up a few busy days at SMM 2026 in Hamburg.

A lot of good conversations, and a few clear signals from the floor.

AI is moving from talk to implementation, especially across manufacturing and service providers. Non-maritime technology companies are becoming more involved. Shipyard booths were consistently busy, ship spare parts had a stronger presence, and defence tech had a major footprint of its own, with naval, military, and private-sector development all on show.

One thing we would have liked to see more of: ship cybersecurity.

As vessels become more connected, and as more systems, suppliers, and digital services come into the maritime environment, cybersecurity needs to be part of the conversation from the start.
