Yesterday, 6th December 2025, the Association for Women Empowerment Cameroon (AWEC) partnered with Hadassah Foundation Cameroon and D-Light Foundation to successfully implement an empowerment and awareness program in Muea Quarter, Buea titled “Empowerment as a Shield: Breaking the Cycle of Gender-Based Violence through Education, Awareness, and Action.”

The event brought together 30+ women, including vulnerable women and internally displaced persons, for a combined session on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness and economic empowerment. Participants were trained on how to prepare puff-puff and beans as a practical income-generating skill. This training was designed to address joblessness among women, which is one of the contributing factors to GBV in many communities.

To encourage participation and support sustainability, an award was presented to the best participant, including start-up capital and basic chef ware, to help her begin her small business.

The program fostered learning, confidence, and solidarity, reinforcing the importance of economic empowerment as a tool for GBV prevention and community safety.

World AIDS Day & 16 Days of Activism Against GBV

As we observe World AIDS Day 2025, under the global theme “ *Ending Inequalities, Ending AIDS* ”, AWEC, in partnership with Action Network Foundation, Sister Empowerment Foundation, and Hadassah Foundation, carried out an HIV and syphilis sensitization and screening outreach at the University of Buea Parish. The activity aimed to educate students on HIV, AIDS, and syphilis, promote early testing, and provide prevention tools to reduce the spread of these infections among young people.

Over 100 students actively participated in the session. They were empowered with critical knowledge, received confidential testing with immediate results, and were provided with condoms as part of preventive health measures. The initiative emphasized the importance of access to health information, stigma reduction, and informed decision making, particularly among the youth population.

This activity also aligns with the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, themed “ *Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls”* , highlighting the intersection between sexual health, protection, and empowerment. By combining awareness, testing, and preventive measures, the outreach reinforces the message that health, safety, and human rights are inseparable and must be promoted collectively.

AWEC and its partners remain committed to advancing youth health, promoting gender equality, and creating safe and informed communities through continuous engagement and impactful interventions.

Association for Women Empowerment Cameroon (AWEC), we recognize the profound impact of HIV/AIDS on women and communities. This World AIDS Day, with the theme "Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response," we reaffirm our commitment to fostering awareness, education, and empowerment.

HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health challenge, especially for women and girls who face unique barriers due to stigma and inequality. Our mission is to advocate for their rights, ensuring equitable access to healthcare, information, and support.

In this time of disruption, we urge our community to prioritize dialogue and education. By breaking the silence surrounding HIV/AIDS, we can create a more informed society that stands in solidarity with those affected.

Join us in our initiatives to transform the AIDS response—whether through workshops, counseling services, or outreach programs. Together, we can create a future free from stigma and discrimination, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Let's take this crucial step forward and empower each other in the fight against HIV/AIDS. 💪❤️

The Association of Women Empowerment Cameroon (AWEC) proudly took part in the official launch of the 2025 Edition of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, held in Buea and organised by MINPROFF, UNFPA, and partner Civil Society Organisations.

This year’s global theme, “ *UNITE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls* ,” speaks to a growing reality digital spaces are becoming new grounds where women and girls face harassment, cyberbullying, image based abuse, and other harmful online behaviours. The campaign calls on all communities to stand together and ensure that technology becomes a tool for empowerment, not intimidation.

The event began with a vibrant sports walk from OIC Market to Bongo Square, bringing together institutions, youth groups, community leaders, and human rights advocates. With placards, chants, and unified messages, participants raised awareness on the urgent need to protect women and girls both online and offline. The walk created strong visibility across the city of Buea and reaffirmed the collective commitment to end all forms of GBV.

AWEC’s presence at the launch reflects its long standing dedication to protecting women’s rights, promoting digital literacy, and fostering safer communities. Through its programs, AWEC continues to educate women and girls on safe online practices, support survivors through awareness and referrals, and work closely with partners to build inclusive, respectful digital and physical environments. We remain committed to strengthening community sensitisation and collaborating with institutions to prevent physical, psychological, economic, and digital violence.

As these 16 Days of Activism unfold, AWEC stands united with national and global partners to advocate for justice, equality, and a world where every woman and girl lives free from violence.

End GBV. End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.
