Today we visit the city of Puerto Natales, which is located on the shores of Seno Ultima Esperanza, (Sound of Last Hope) which was named by the explorer Juan Ladrillero, who in 1557 tried to find the northern entrance to the Strait of Magellan without success. In 1830 the area was explored by the famous expedition of the frigate HMS Beagle, under the command of Captain Fitzroy. After further exploratory expeditions in 1893, a former captain of the German merchant marine, Hermann Eberhard, settled here and soon, German and English settlers, driven by the high quality of land in the area, began to follow. Finally, on May 31, 1911 the city of Puerto Natales was officially founded. Many new settlers began arriving, rapidly increasing the number of inhabitants of the small town. Now, its considered to be one of the nicest small towns in Patagonia, known for its colorful buildings, beautiful location and it’s great social life, with lively bars, restaurants and cafes. Though cattle ranching and fishing remain an important part of the regions prosperity, increasingly tourism is taking over as the most important activity, particularly as the city is considered the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. While you are, you should here try a typical Patagonian lunch at a local restaurant. Sea food, roast lamb and beef here are all of an excellent quality. After lunch we return to the city of Punta Arenas following the Route 9, a distance of about 250 kilometers. The city was founded in 1848 and became the commercial center of southern Patagonia, due to its strategic location on the Strait of Magellan.

The famous Carretera Austral (the Southern Highway) and this is where our road adventure will begin! This legendary route through Chilean Patagonia had been in the minds of several Chilean governments, for secral decades, but then in 1976, the construction was begun. Eventually, after 20 years of work, by thousands of builders and after USD 200 million were spent on construction, the highway was completed.

From Puyuhuapi, the road follows the eastern edge of the fjord along one of the most beautiful sections of the Carretera Austral, with views of the Termas de Puyuhuapi , where we will stay overnight. The resort is on the western edge of the fjord and is accessible only by boat. This amazing thermal spring resort is located in a small bay and surrounded by dense virgin forests, which gives the place a magical atmosphere. Here, it’s possible to enjoy the indoor or outdoor thermal pools while admiring a magnificent view of the fiord. The spa offers many treatments to guests, including thalassotherapy, seaweed and mud wrap with evaporation, aromatherapy and relaxing massages. The hotel facilities were built in the refined local style, using some unique species of trees, typical of the area.
