Many children in Uganda grow up with debilitating conditions which lead to lifelong hardship and exclusion from their communities. A one time surgical intervention that costs on average around $500 can significantly shift the path of a child’s life from one of perpetual poverty to a life with the hope of education and eventually the ability to provide for one’s family. The surgeries and rehabilita

Michael came to our center with bilateral equinus feet as a result of being born with cerebral palsy. An equinus deformity is when the heel cannot touch the ground due tight calf muscles, tendon restrictions, or structural limitations. In this case, his neurological condition led to him having rigid and tight tendons lifting his heels high off the ground and making it very difficult for him to walk.
Michael is just finishing up a year of treatment with us, and what an amazing transformation! He went through treatment to lengthen his achilles tendons and he is now able to walk with his feet in a plantigrade position for the first time!
Life is hard for him as he is dealing with a lot of health issues at a young age, but having 2 flat feet will give him a fighting chance and make things a bit easier. His smile says it all!
Today is World Clubfoot Day!
The goal of this day is to bring awareness to the birth defect known as clubfoot and its treatment. The day takes place on Dr. Ignacio Ponseti's birthday. He is the developer of the Ponseti Method, a non-surgical and highly effective treatment process that involves foot manipulation, casting, and bracing - like Aisha is wearing! This method is for children 2 and under and has a success rate of almost 100% when followed.
Clubfoot is our most common condition at O4A. In 2025 we treated 147 kids with clubfoot, from infancy up to the late teens. We use the Ponseti method for our young patients, but older children require surgery to lengthen their achilles tendon. Surgery is more invasive and takes longer to heal, but many kids' lives are changed for the better because of it!

AMAZING UPDATE: Sharon has come such a long way over the last 3 years! We have become quite fond of her and it's been an absolute joy to watch her begin to flourish as her physical healing has progressed.
Between her arm and neck Sharon has undergone 6 surgeries and is now at a point of being able to move and bend her arm, close her mouth, turn her head, and of course smile! She's been working hard on her physiotherapy exercises and speech therapy and will now have the opportunity to start school.
When she first arrived in 2023, she didn't speak and kept to herself, never engaging with the children around her... but now she freely moves about and plays and interacts with the kids. It's such a joy to watch!

Showing the amazing transformation of a baby's clubfoot journey never gets old... especially when it's accompanied by such a cute smile!
Special thanks to a local elementary school that raised money to change Reuben's life for the better! We wouldn't be able to serve these children in Uganda without the generous efforts and support of people like you.

We want to acknowledge all of the wonderful mothers who fight for their children's health and wellbeing in the face of many obstacles and difficulties.
We also know there are many grandmothers and other women who take on a mothering role out of love and compassion for children that are not their own.
We're so grateful for all of these strong and beautiful women and will continue to support, counsel, and equip them with what they need to thrive.

The Hawks Team hit the trails last May and were one of our top fundraising teams. Every year our highest fundraising teams, or individuals, get matched with a child in need. When you are matched with a specific child you receive their name, condition, and regular photo updates of their treatment progress until completion.
Paul was matched with the Hawks last year and finally had his left foot treated at the age of 11. What an amazing transformation!
YOU too can help a child like Paul by registering for our Run4Another 2026. It's on Saturday May 9th in Bechtel Park, Waterloo.
