Every week, I love digging into the stories behind the music, and tonight’s show has some great ones. From the sharp synth of Heaven 17 to the raw pulse of The Psychedelic Furs, we’re tracing the paths of bands who built entire scenes from scratch—sometimes with nothing more than a rented studio and a lot of nerve.

Tonight, we’ll also jump into a Wave to the Future segment featuring Men Without Hats, look at the early days of The Untouchables and their unlikely rise in the L.A. ska scene, and spotlight more hidden gems, B-sides, and deep cuts from across the 80s map.

There’s a moment in tonight’s show from a band who once made their first demo on a battered four-track held together with masking tape. Not for effect, but because it was actually breaking apart. They recorded with one hand on the microphone and the other holding the machine shut, terrified they’d lose the take. But they got it… and that fragile little tape ended up getting them their first radio play.

That’s the kind of magic we’re tapping into tonight, the stories behind the sounds. Tune in at 10.

🎶 This week on The Ripple Effect! 🌊

The Pukka Orchestra is a Canadian 🇨🇦 New Wave band formed in Toronto in 1979. The band's core members were Graeme Williamson, who was the vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, along with Neil Chapman and Tony Duggan-Smith, who were both guitarists and co-songwriters. The band's name was inspired by the Hindi word "pukka," which means "genuine," "authentic," and "first class." This word was coined by Tony Duggan-Smith's grandfather, who was a harbour master in Calcutta. He advised Tony to play only in the best bands, like the Pukka Orchestra. The band often used guest musicians, which led people to joke that everyone was in the Pukka Orchestra.

The Pukka Orchestra's self-titled debut album was released in 1984, with Graeme Williamson leading the band. The album contained hits like "Cherry Beach Express" and "Listen to the Radio," and their unique blend of rock, pop, and punk music was emblematic of the era's eclectic spirit.
