What better project to learn about electrical engineering concepts than a line-following robot.🤖
Prototyping robotics is a fun way for students to learn about sensors, motion control, and PCB design.
Plus, lessons learned from making a line-following robot have applications that students can apply to other projects.

What's the science behind the reflow process?
Reflow happens when solder paste is heated. This causes the flux in the solder paste to evaporate, and melts the metal solder that then binds components to pads on the board.
Take a look at reflow in action! (We used V-One's integrated heated bed to reflow these boards.)

We're going to TechBlick's The Future of Electronics RESHAPED in two weeks — are you?
Stop by booth H02 and say hi to Gio Obando and Huy Nguyen! They'll be doing live prints with NOVA, our materials dispensing system.
Plus, don't miss our masterclass on wearable electronics prototyping on June 10th at 4:30 pm (track 2).
See you there!
By the way, this video is from a live demonstration on NOVA at a recent trade show.
Did you know that V-One can dispense solder paste and reflow directly on the print area?
Our reflow area heats up to 240°C for up to 60 minutes. No ovens required!

Tips for making vias for double-sided boards with a PCB printer:
💡Avoid fibreglass-based substrates (like FR4). They're difficult to drill through.
💡Use a sacrifical layer under your substrate while drilling to protect your surface.
💡To ensure the rivets fit well, the drilled hole diameter needs to be 0.1 mm larger than the rivet outer diameter.

If you're prototyping flexible hybrid electronics (FHEs), how do you measure ROI for the tools or methods you use?
For engineers developing FHE devices, the key ROI question usually isn't which method has the lowest unit cost at scale. It's which method makes it easier and more economical to keep iterating while the design is still changing.
We recently compared direct ink write (DIW) technology with screen printing for prototyping. We looked at:
💸Material cost
💸Stencil and consumable costs
💸Labour costs
And of course, time spent iterating.

Industry trends in PCBA manufacturing👇
1️⃣Component miniaturization
As wearables, consumer electronics, and medical devices become more lightweight and compact, they require smaller components and more integrated designs, which directly drives smaller SMD packages and higher density layouts, including fine-pitch quad-flat no-leads (QFN) and solderless micro ball grid arrays (BGA).
2️⃣Machine and deep learning for automated optical inspection
Automated optical inspection (AOI) is now standard across SMT production, yet its effectiveness is constrained by false calls that require manual review. Deep learning-based inspection systems are emerging to address this imbalance.
3️⃣Supply chain risks
The SMD components supply chain is vulnerable to disruptions from geopolitics, natural disasters, IP risks, and demand spikes. In response, governments and industry have accelerated reshoring efforts.
Are there other trends we missed? Let us know in the comments.
