Child Language and Mathematics Lab
In the Child Language and Math Lab at Wilfrid Laurier University, we focus on questions of language and mathematical development.
Our Lab at Wilfrid Laurier University is an exciting place where we understand how children begin to learn language and math. If you have a child between 12 and 39 months of age, or know someone with a child in this age range, we'd like to invite you to participate in our studies. As you've probably already noticed, your child pays attention to your voice and listens when you talk. By observing ho

Sylvia Andrade, an undergraduate student and Dr. Lee are currently conducting a study examining the nature of spatial talk used between parent-child dyads during play. We are hoping to recruit families with children aged 3-5 with Autism Spectrum Disorder and who have been assessed using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). This past week research assistants Ruth Aruliah, Calandra Li, Anthony Trinh, Alexa Negotei and Sylvia Andrade had the opportunity to present findings from a large project at the Development 2018 conference in Niagara, Ontario. The two presentations were as follows: "Free vs. Paid Apps: Which ones are more Educational?" and "Do Math Apps Support Foundational Numeracy Skills?"
The team was excited as both these posters generated discussion among others attending the conference.

On March 22nd, Wilfrid Laurier University will be holding a Poster Conference for all Thesis Psychology students. Dr. Lee's undergraduate student, Monica Crnogorac, will be displaying her research. This project examines the amount of spatial talk produced between parent and child, using both 2D and 3D toys. To make these results even more accurate, we are still looking for a family to observe in their playtime. Please do not hesitate to reach out and click the link for more information!

The Child Language and Math Lab has embarked on an innovative approach to crowdfund a research project with applied focus.
Supported by Laurier Alumni the project will offer evidence-based early childhood resources to parents and grandparents as well as educators who offer programming for children in full-day kindergartens and libraries.
For further information visit: http://www.laurieralumni.ca/s/1681/15/interior-giving.aspx?sid=1681&gid=2&sitebuilder=1&pgid=2038, and feel free to fund this project.
Apps Gap Educational math apps are becoming increasingly relied upon tools for building children’s foundational knowledge and skills for parents, grandparents and early childhood educators (ECEs) alike. However, the educational quality in terms of content and how the skills are taught within a specific app h...
Dr. Lee recently had a journal article published. The title is: Tap, swipe, and build: Parental spatial input during iPad® and toy play and is available to read on this website, http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/icd.2061/abstract.
The articles looks at the impact that 3D play and 2D play context has on the production of spatial language.
If you are a student at Wilfrid Laurier University, you will be able to access it through the school's library.
Tap, swipe, and build: Parental spatial input during iPad® and toy play Despite the increase in the use of interactive technological devices, little is known about the impact that play context has on the production of spatial language by parents. To investigate whether there...
