Francois Couperin 'le Grand' was an organist and harpsichordist active during the middle period of the French Harpsichord School. He published four collections of harpsichord pieces and a treatise on the correct playing of the harpsichord. His works were very highly regarded at their time, not just in France but all around Europe - J.S. Bach included some of his favourites of Couperin's works in a notebook of pieces for his second wife, including this one, Les Bergeries, from the 6eme Ordre in B flat Major. This work is a tender, innocent rondeau with three couplets and varying repetitions of the main theme. I particularly enjoy Yoann Moulin's sensitive interpretation here.

Franz Schubert is a composer from the transition period between the Classical era of CPE Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, and the Romantic era of Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. He lived a very short life, dying of illness at age 31, but still composed over a thousand works of music in that time! Most pianists are familiar with some of the short and tuneful waltzes, impromptus and moments musicaux, but forget that he was also a masterful composer of long-form, multi-movement pieces such as the Sonata in A minor D.845, presented here by Alfred Brendel. Give it a listen, it's a very special piece.

One of my students passed away recently, quite unexpectedly. I will sorely miss the times we spent together leveling up his piano skills and doing deep dives into music theory and music history. Here's a video of Jonathan playing along with his dad, a folk music artist. Rest in peace, Jonathan. You will be greatly missed!

Congratulations to my adult student Peter Chen, who is defending his PhD dissertation in Computer Science tomorrow before moving back to China for a prestigious university appointment. We had our last lesson today. I really love how dedicated he was to getting started learning piano while busy with graduate school. Peter told me his practice time and our weekly lessons gave him a great emotional outlet that helped him deal with the stress of his studies. Cheers, Peter!

Changes are coming for fall for my piano studio! I am reducing my days at Uptown School of Music down to just one day starting in July - Tuesdays. My partner and I bought a house in the Westvale neighbourhood of Waterloo on the west side, so I am happy to announce I will be offering lessons out of my home studio starting in August! This also means I will have more slots available for new students to begin lessons! DM me for more information.

Practicing some pieces by Medtner, Brahms and Beethoven today, I couldn't help but feel awesome about how much my students inspire me to work hard with my own playing. Not sure whether it's going to be Medtner, Brahms or Beethoven that I will play for the June recital, but I know I will be working hard!
We've gotten a great start to the 2024-2025 school year. Lots of interesting projects with my students. It's been great to see how they've all grown over the summer months.
Wishing all my students a happy last week of school and a fun last week of spring lessons before most of you take a break over the summer. I am so proud of how you all did in the recital! You have made so much progress this year!
Congratulations to my students on their recent successes in Kiwanis Music Festival!
