Adding a barrier to the trunk of your trees is a low cost way of reducing the damage these insects can cause.

Here are two options:

Get a piece of burlap around 45cm wide and wrap it around the tree. Tie a string around the tree in the middle of the burlap and fold the upper portion down to form a skirt with the string as the belt. The caterpillars will crawl into this shelter and then you can manually dispose of them.

Another effective tree wrap is tight to the trunk and covered in a long lasting sticky coating to trap insects crawling across. Make it at least 15cm wide and check frequently to make sure it's still working and not covered in debris.
