Foundhearts

For the mothers who are with us, and those carried in memory - today is a tribute to the quiet strength that has held families, homes, and generations together. Mothers are often the unseen glue of society; the steady hands, the open hearts, and enduring love that shape who we become. Their care and love lives in the smallest moments and the deepest parts of us, long after the words have faded.
My carved hearts are created in honour of that lasting connection. Each one is a small reminder that love, when given fully, leaves an imprint that time cannot erase. Today we celebrate mothers past and present- the the women whose hearts continue to hold us together.

When hand carving the Hearts I make - I have to attach a caving post. These pictures show attaching the post. They also show the tools I use are exceedingly sharp and occasionally I get bit by one. Each Heart goes through twenty plus steps from raw reclaimed timber to gallery quality art work.

The silent sentinels of our planet stand all around us - on our streets, in our yards, deep within the wilderness- quietly shaping the world we inhabit.

Giving us shelter, warmth and shade, nourishing us and cleansing our air. Around them lives entire ecosystems take root and thrive.

In my work, they offer something more-raw organic material with history, character, and soul.

Today, on Earth day, I pause to acknowledge there quiet generosity.

Each Heart is made to hold meaning,especially in moments when words are not enough. No two are alike - just like the stories they hold and carry for the life event they represent.

Salt Spring Island Arbutus - a remarkable timber - shaped by costal wind, time and tide. From this timber will come a number of batches of hand caved hearts. Each one will carry the warmth, connective messaging, and unmistakable grain that only Arbutus can offer.

I don’t make a lot of merging Hearts. But I have some on the drawing board. Merging Hearts shows the enduring force that binds people - love.
