So I actually got this pedal with a drum kit I bought quite a while ago. The kit itself is a mid to late-70s Ludwig Octaplus. According to the serial numbers it’s around 1976, and it’s got the blue and olive badges, which a lot of Ludwig collectors love.
And if you’ve ever seen an Octaplus kit, they’re ridiculous. Just a massive setup. Seven pieces, toms everywhere, the whole thing. Total beast of a kit.
When I bought it, it came with a pile of gear. Stands, hardware, pedals, all kinds of random drum stuff. Just a big stack of extras that came with the drums. Which was great.
This Iron Cobra pedal was one of the things in that pile. And funny enough, I never actually tried it until now.
My whole life I’ve pretty much been a DW pedal guy. Especially the DW 9000. That’s been my go-to for years. Usually the one I gig with, travel with, all that.
But today I figured I’d finally give this Iron Cobra a shot.
First thing I noticed right away is it feels a little heavier under the foot. Not bad. Just different. A bit more solid.
The easiest way I can describe it is kind of like the difference between a luxury sports car and a muscle car.
The DW 9000 feels like the luxury sports car. Really smooth. Really effortless.
The Iron Cobra feels more like a muscle car. It’s got a bit more punch. It pushes back at you just a little bit. The rebound feels a bit snappier too.
That’s literally just from messing around on it for a couple minutes, but those were my first impressions.
And honestly, I don’t mind it. I actually kind of like it.
I think this one might end up becoming my practice pedal, and I’ll probably keep traveling with the DW9000.
One other cool thing about that Octaplus kit, by the way. Even though those kits are famous for having concert toms, this one actually has resonant heads on the bottoms of the toms as well. So it’s not just the batter head on top. It’s got the bottom heads too, which I actually prefer because it gives the toms more body and sustain.
First impression: Thumbs Up
The country feels tense right now. You can almost cut the tension. Got a knife? Try it. You'll see.
You can almost smell a mix of wood smoke, diesel, and the static electricity of another culture war warming up on the internet.
Ah, f**k.
I just want to drink some goddamn coffee and watch the Elk who visit my front lawn every morning
But this is too important.
You see, somewhere in a Canadian s**t pile sits Bill C-9, a piece of legislation that on paper reads like dry legal housekeeping. But online, it’s being talked about like the government just kicked down the church doors and confiscated the Bible.
Some would paint Carney in a pentagram and devil horns chanting an incantation wildly on the doorstep of evangelicalism while putting their babies in cages.
Yep...
Spend five minutes on YouTube or Facebook and you’ll hear the same phrase repeated like a spell.
Censorship law.
The right is framing it as the moment Canada finally crossed the line. A creeping authoritarianism wrapped in polite Ottawa language. They warn pastors will be arrested. Sermons monitored. Christian doctrine turned into a criminal offense.
Remember this MAGA paranoia:
"They're eating the dogs! The poor f**king puppies..."
This is the MAPLE-MAGA Version.
Fear is powerful. Religion lives deep in the bones of a country. It’s ritual. Memory. Family dinners after church. Old hymn books that smell like dust and wood polish. When people think the state might reach into that sacred space, the reaction is primal.
But here’s the thing that tends to disappear once the internet torches get lit.
Canada already has hate-speech laws.
They’ve existed for decades. Section 319 of the Criminal Code already criminalizes the wilful promotion of hatred. And the courts have interpreted it incredibly narrowly. The Supreme Court has repeatedly said offensive speech alone is not illegal. Not even close. The bar is high enough that prosecutors almost never touch it.
Truthfully...
You can preach scripture in Canada. You can criticize sexuality. You can argue theology. You can even be deeply offensive. Horribly offensive, actually.
