The forecast is for cold weather, let's keep those power bills under control. Close off and seal unused rooms, keep a close eye on the thermostats and grab an extra blanket or two!

Some older homes came equipped with three seperate chimney flues, often a large one for the fireplace, typically blackened one for the oil furnace and sometimes a third flue for a lower level fireplace or wood stove. We will always recommend capping off current flues that are no longer in use so they will not deteriorate from rain and snow, but also to prevent animal intrusion. Secured metal cap flashing is the best material.

With no end in sight to the rain it is a good time to take a peak in your attic to check for leaks, this attic has a lot of other problems but keeping the water out is the number one priority, it was not doing a very good job. Valleys, protrusions, and low slope areas are usually where leaks begin.

This marks Island Home Inspection's fifth year of business. Celebrate everything you can! Over the years I've seen thousands of homes and a crazy housing market go up and down, what a ride. We want to thank everyone for their continued business, referrals, and support (from all the trades too). We are very fortunate to live and work here in Victoria, and we will continue to help people turn houses into homes with thorough professional inspections.
With so many new homes relying on electricity to stay warm these storms can really wreak havoc. Crews are working hard to restore power, stay bundled.

It can be tough to tell mushrooms apart, they love rotten soil and shaded areas, be especially weary of the Death Cap Mushroom this time of year, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/death-cap-mushroom-victoria-1.4208753
We are in a very busy time of year for real estate transactions, more housing is available and inspections times are nearly full, be sure to book in advance.
