NWFR Volunteer Fire Department Proudly Serving The Regional District of Central Okanagan 🚒👨‍🚒

Every firefighter watching this knows what staging does to a person. 😅

For those outside the fire service: Staging is a designated area where crews wait until they’re assigned a task. It helps keep emergency scenes organized, safe, and efficient.

Share with your crew members who have mastered the art of professional waiting. 🤙

🚨Lights flashing? Sirens sounding?🚨

When emergency vehicles are responding, every second counts. Pull over to the right when safe, stop, and give first responders the space they need to get where they’re going. If you can’t move to the right, stop and stay where you are.

Your quick action could help save a life.

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Grady Brewer on his promotion to Captain.

Following the retirement of a longtime Captain from NWFR Station 102, Captain Brewer will be stepping into this role that carries significant responsibility and leadership within our department.

This promotion reflects years of hard work, dedication, professionalism, and a commitment to serving both his fellow firefighters and our community.

The rank of Captain requires strong leadership, sound decision-making, mentorship, and accountability. Through his service as a Lieutenant, Brewer has consistently demonstrated these qualities and has earned the trust and respect of those around him. This promotion is a testament to the effort he has invested throughout his career and is well deserved.

We are confident Captain Brewer will continue the tradition of excellence established at Station 102 and look forward to seeing him succeed in this new role.

Congratulations, Captain Brewer, on this well-earned promotion.

We are pleased to announce that Connor Yih has officially earned his Black Helmet and has been promoted to Exterior Firefighter.

Connor began his journey with our department as a junior member and has dedicated the past five years to training, learning, and serving our community. Through a school program, he was awarded a scholarship to attend a firefighting program, where he received extensive training in both structural firefighting and wildfire protection.

Since joining the department, Connor has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, commitment to training, and passion for the fire service. Earning a Black Helmet is an important milestone that reflects the hard work and dedication he has put into his firefighting career.

Please join us in congratulating Connor on this well-deserved achievement. We are proud to have him as part of our team and look forward to seeing his continued growth within the department.

The fire service is built on teamwork—and teamwork works best when we bring different strengths to the table.

Some of us are tall. Some of us are short. Some are strong, fast, analytical, calm under pressure, great communicators, natural leaders, or skilled problem-solvers. We all bring different strengths, and that's what makes us a great crew.

Diversity isn't just about appearances—it's about perspectives, experiences, abilities, and the unique skills each person contributes. A fire crew full of people with identical strengths would be far less effective than one where everyone brings something different.

Difference doesn't make us weaker. It makes our team stronger.

Turns out being "short staffed" isn't such a problem when you've got the right crew.

*Community reminder* — every Tuesday night, our members are out training and sharpening our skills. So if you see us around your neighbourhood, that’s what we’re up to!

This past Tuesday’s training focused on wildland operations and improving the speed and efficiency of filling our fire trucks from the lake using our marine engine. Training like this helps keep our team be prepared and ready to respond when needed.

From fighting wildfires, to cutting patients free in auto extrications, to providing emergency medical care, to structural firefighting — our members train for it all.

One department. Many roles. One mission: serving our community when it matters most. 💪

Which NWFR professional are you choosing?

🔥 April Firefighter of the Month: Shawn Huskinson 🔥

This month, we are proud to recognize Shawn Huskinson as our April Firefighter of the Month.

Not every contribution in the fire service happens on the fireground. Some of the most important work happens quietly behind the scenes — and Shawn is a perfect example of that.

Around Station 102, Shawn is always willing to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. Whether it’s cleaning around the hall, helping keep the trucks clean and ready, or taking care of the little things that often go unnoticed, helping keep our department operationally ready.

His willingness to step up and take pride in the day-to-day work helps create an environment that the entire department benefits from. The effort he puts in behind the scenes does not go unnoticed, and it reflects the kind of teammate every hall is lucky to have.

Beyond the work itself, Shawn brings a warm friendliness and positive attitude that helps boost morale around the station. He’s the kind of person who makes the hall a better place to be, always approachable, supportive, and willing to help out wherever needed. Those qualities have a bigger impact than people often realize and help strengthen the sense of teamwork and camaraderie within our department.

Shawn also brings a strong eagerness to learn every time he responds to a call. He consistently shows up ready to listen, improve, and gain more experience with each opportunity. His commitment to learning and becoming better with every call demonstrates the kind of dedication that makes a great firefighter.

Shawn, thank you for everything you do both around the hall and on calls. Your hard work, positivity, and quiet contributions make a meaningful impact on our department every single day. We are proud to recognize you this month and grateful to have you as part of our fire family.

We fell a little behind but without further ado…

🔥 March Firefighter of the Month: Ryan Massie 🔥

It is with great pride that we congratulate and recognize Ryan Massie as our March Firefighter of the Month.

Ryan continues to demonstrate an incredible commitment to both our department and the fire service through his hard work, dedication, and drive to continually improve himself.

Recently, Ryan has completed extensive additional training outside of the regular upkeep and department training we do. His recent accomplishments include Rope Rescue, Fire Officer 1, and Fire Service Instructor certifications.

Ryan has invested a tremendous amount of his own time into continuing his education and expanding his knowledge, all with the goal of becoming a stronger firefighter, teammate, and future leader within the fire service.

He demonstrates natural leadership abilities through his confidence, communication, and ability to help direct operations effectively during practice and on calls. He is committed to being the best he can be every time the pager goes off and consistently shows up ready to give his all.

Ryan’s dedication, work ethic, and passion for the fire service do not go unnoticed. It is a privilege to work alongside him and watch his continued growth within the department.

Ryan, thank you for your continued commitment to the department, your passion for learning, and your dedication to serving our community. We are proud to recognize your achievements and look forward to seeing your continued impact within our hall and our community!
