Case Study from Coach Kyla
- Is your limited mobility causing you to swing over the top? -

There are many root causes as to why you may swing over the top however in today’s case study we are going to look at two mobility limitations that can cause an over the top swing and one way to work around it.

Limitations:
1. Backswing rotation - are you creating enough depth? Golfers who are limited in either hip or torso rotation may struggle to get the club deep enough behind them. When unwinding in the downswing this lack of depth can cause the club to get out in front of the golfer too soon.
2. Trail shoulder internal/external rotation - does your shoulder move internally (win the arm wrestle) too much in the down swing? Golfers who are limited in external shoulder rotation (lose the arm wrestle) will struggle to shallow the club. If the trail shoulder moves internally in the downswing the club will tip in front of the body and you are more than likely committed to an over the top swing.

The Work Around:
STAGGER your stance - Start with your feet square to your target line, then drop your trail foot back, try to match your shoulders to this line as well. The ’stagger’ gives you a head start on your backswing rotation and creates more depth in relation to your target line. This will help shift your base line and your path more right for a right handed golfer.
Once you have shifted your base line make some swings to feel like you are swinging back and through along your adjusted foot line. You can add an external target to really ramp up your intention on swinging more from the inside (see the green noodle in the video).

For the serious golfer with limited mobility:
Start with the staggered stance. Find an expert that can help you improve your mobility via physiotherapy or exercise (hips, torso, shoulder, whatever might be holding your back).
