Mobilizing Inuit Cultural Heritage Project is a multi-media/multi platform re-engagement of voice in visual art and performance. Talk to us on Twitter and keep up with our travels on Instagram @MICHProj
The project aims to re-engage Inuit voices in the dialogue of contemporary art and performance as well as to preserve Inuit oral and material culture. This will be done through research, preservation, digitization, and employing resources in support of artistic and cultural practices. Various research and creation activities related to media archives, collections management, digital storytelling, arctic festivals, and Inuit art will be supported over the 6 years of the SSHRC Partnership Grant. The three primary objectives are:
- To provide access to advanced information and communication technologies;
- The connection of Inuit voice to objects of Inuit cultural heritage;
- Expanding the creation of Inuit cultural capacity. The Principle Investigator is Anna Hudson, Professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University. Partner organizations include:
- Universities: Western, Laval, Guelph, Concordia, Aberdeen
- Galleries: McMichael, National Gallery of Canada, Sami Centre for Contemporary Art
- GN Department of Education, Nunavut Arctic College
- Pinnguaq
- Isuma Productions
- West Baffin Eskimo Co-op

Ruth Sangoya lives in the community of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet). She is a prominent community elder who spent much of her early life living a traditional life on the land. She is an expert seamstress, and has taught many generations how to sew. For the 2015 Mittimatalik Arnait Miqsuqtuit Project, Ruth Sangoya held a series of workshops on sealskin kamik making. This clip was filmed in February of 2015. Here, expert seamstress Ruth Sangoya demonstrates how to attach an instep to a pair of bleached sealskin (naluaq) kamiks.
As we move into the new year, we look back at our research projects and share our achievements through video and image collections.

Mittimatalik Arnait Miqsuqtuit Collective was founded in January 2015. Our goal is to create a digital archive of sealskin sewing master classes for use by local seamstresses who want to learn the skill. This compilation serves as an introduction to our work and features clips from our first set of sessions in February 2015. That winter we worked with expert seamstresses Ruth Sangoya, Paomee Komangapik, and Koopa Kippomee: three seamstresses who were all very keen to share their skills with younger community members.
