Today on World Cancer Day, I'm reflecting on what "United by Unique" really means.
Every experience with cancer is unique. Behind every diagnosis lies a unique human story – stories of shock, fear, courage, pain, healing, resilience, grief, love, and hope. Cancer touches millions of lives in countless ways, but it doesn't define who we are. We are more than a disease, more than a statistic.
As President of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO), I believe deeply that cancer care must look beyond the disease to see the person before the patient. Psychosocial oncology recognizes that a cancer diagnosis affects every aspect of a person's life: mental health, relationships, work, identity, and future. Quality cancer care can't just focus on tumors; it must support the whole person through their unique journey.
Yet too many Canadians lack access to the psychosocial services they need. That's why CAPO is focused on expanding access, advocating for integrated care models, and supporting innovation in how we deliver compassionate cancer care.
This June, we're gathering in St. John's for "A New Horizon: Expanding the Access and Impact of Psychosocial Oncology." Join us as we work together to create a world where the unique needs of people and communities come first.
Because together, we can create change. Together, we are .
