For both working Service and Therapy dogs, teaching your pup to "Go Potty" on cue is a life skill—but don't forget to practice on different surfaces, weather, and environments.

True socialization is about exposing your dog to the world around them, not just meeting new people. In an emergency or a busy day out, I don’t want my dogs to be stressed if their usual patch of grass isn't an option.

I've personally used all of these surfaces when options were limited:

✅ Mulch
✅ Wet Grass
✅ Concrete
✅ Gravel
✅ P*e Pads
✅ Sand

𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝗲. We don’t want our working dogs relieving themselves whenever or wherever they want, especially while working. I also ‘undress’ my dogs prior so the antecedents or the ‘𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴’ 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 are clear for them!

One last factor 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Will your working dog relieve themselves in tight spaces, near traffic or while it's raining?

Does positive training still work when your dog spots a squirrel or deer?

The biggest myth about dog training is that we’re just "out-bribing" your dog with treats. The real goal isn't to make them choose to come back—it’s to turn that recall into a hardwired, 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅

Here is the science behind why this works:

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: We aren't asking your dog to debate whether the distraction is more fun than the reward. By training consistently, we move the behaviour away from a "decision" and into a 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘂𝘀-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 (𝗦-𝗥) 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆: Think of it like learning to drive or play an instrument. By practicing in safe, controlled environments, we help your dog build 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 that becomes second nature.

𝗕𝘆𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻’𝘀 "𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻" 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿: When that reflex is fully built, the sound of your cue triggers an 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 toward you. It happens faster than their brain can even process the distraction, effectively bypassing the need to "think" about whether to chase it.

It’s not about the dog "being good" in the moment; it’s about making sure coming back is the fastest, easiest, and most practiced response they have.

When I talk about keeping service dogs in their “sweet spot” while training, I often reference the Yerkes-Dodson Curve. It’s a helpful guide that visualizes how to keep a dog calm, focused, and ready to learn.

However, no single tool tells the whole story.

A dog’s behavior is complex, and there’s so much more going on “under the hood” than a simple graph can show. Factors like 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴’𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 all play a major role in how they handle stress and learning.

Why does this matter for you and your service dog?

Understanding your dog’s unique background and history is the key to creating a training plan that truly fits their needs and helps them succeed.
