In 2021, Cinthya Lopez Mora was forced to flee her home of Nicaragua to seek protection as a refugee.
Why did she have to run? Three years earlier, she had taken to the streets with thousands of other Nicaraguans in peaceful protest against her country's authoritarian regime. For her political affiliations and social media activity, Cinthya was targeted by government supporters and was forced to leave her country. Today, she calls Canada home.

And the Beth Lida community has a chance to hear her amazing story February 2nd, at a special Shabbat dinner focused on the Jewish value of welcoming the stranger.

Along with HIAS, we are hosing a special "Refugee Shabbat," honouring the sacred Jewish value of caring for the stranger. We are currently in the thick of the Exodus story, which taught our people the importance of not oppressing newcomers or refugees.
Along with the spirited, musical davvening & the DELICIOUS catered dinner, we are blessed to have Adam Sadinsky, a refugee lawyer, facilitate a conversation with a client, who will share about their experiences. (Adam will also give a special d'var Torah the next morning... so you won't have to hear me blather!
It will be a meaningful program with loving community and scrumptious food. Do not hesitate to register! Tickets will sell out fast!
