Inkubator
Inkubator is a team of experienced magazine designers who work with publishers, editors, creative and art directors at independently-minded publications. Smart.
Sophisticated. Confident. We foster growth by enabling publishers and editors to focus on the larger picture, while we transparently manage the design and digital production of the publication. We work internationally, with clients in North America, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. Inkubator was established in 1999 by the husband-and-wife team of Alen and Sandra Zukanovich. Here is some of our earliest work for Vice Magazine, in 2001-2002 era. The masthead credits Darth Vader as the Editor.
1. An infamous cover for “The 80s Issue”, where we printed a silver foil in the shape of a mirror and then embossed a line of white powder along the bottom. The back cover also contained an ad with the same effect, with the advertiser’s logo fashioned out of the same white powder.
2. An article by Dave One (of Chromeo) about the geography of hip hop, with The East Coast, The Midwest, The West Coast and The Dirty South artists shown on the map. The map artwork took some time to put together, but it was a fun illustration to do. This issue also had poorly drawn sharks superimposed on every page.
3. An article by Juan Mclean about new ways to do drugs, and dangers of doing so.
4. A fashion shoot based on the idea of a brochure for a fictional “Institute of Primary Studies”, featuring Beans of Anti-pop Consortium as a Math Science student.
5. An article by David Cross about why New York Sucks compared to LA, and an article about getting inexcusably drunk with The Strokes (in 2001).
6. A gatefold cover inspired by the Sticky Fingers album by The Rolling Stones, which opens to reveal a pair of tighty whities.

Just looking at these double-page spreads of trichome-laden leaves was enough to give us a buzz. For extra-large photos of these beauties visit the Heads Magazine section on Inkubator’s website (link in bio).

Some of our favourite layouts from the first issue of ❤️ we love the mix of classic and current rock ‘n’ roll. Raymond Pettibon on the cover, Kool Keith’s cocktail recipe, analysis of mosh pit dynamics, Amyl & the Sniffers’ nap schedule, Warthog’s skulleted mascot’s birthday party, The Who’s shenanigans and the investigative piece about the murder of a communist bookstore owner, referenced in a Sonic Youth song.

We send our condolences and lend our support to Charlie Hebdo. Being no strangers to journalistic controversy and censorship, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our French colleagues. The results of this cowardly attack prove yet again that you can’t muzzle free speech—Stéphane Charbonnier’s voice is now amplified a thousandfold, and it's growing louder than ever.
