Has the Autonomous Trucking Revolution Arrived?

The trucking industry is currently in a bind. On the one hand, it has a miserable safety record, with over five thousand trucking-related fatalities annually. As 60 Minutes highlighted to the world, many small carriers are shady, fly-by-night operations that regularly break even the most basic rules of the road. And now that the Supreme Court has decided that freight brokers can be held liable for accidents caused by carriers they book—the biggest of those brokers, C.H. Robinson, recently lost a whopping $604 million suit—it seems inevitable that the trucking industry is going to have to clean up its act.

On three years of genocide and rising antisemitism

Too often, when I find myself in conversation with fellow Jews on this topic, the discussion feels oddly out of whack/balance. Most of it ends up deliberating on the rise of antisemitism. We are indeed witnessing a rise in antisemitic attacks in Canada, the US, Australia, much of Europe – of that there is no doubt. But here in Canada, thankfully, no one has been killed in these attacks. Canada has, in contrast, seen the murders of Muslim people in at least two Islamophobic hate crimes in recent years. And in Gaza, over 74,000 are now dead, one third of them children born since the last election held there. Over the last three years, Gaza has been one of the most dangerous places on earth to be a child, a journalist, a teacher, a health professional, all at the hands of a purportedly “liberal democratic” state. Israel claims to do this in our name.

Ontario’s minimum wage is falling further behind the living wage

The minimum wage is a legal floor: the minimum amount the provincial government requires employers to pay workers. Although the rate increase is adjusted for inflation each year, it bears no relation to the cost of living. It is an arbitrary amount. In 2025, the minimum wage for most employees was $17.60, and on October 1, 2026, it will increase to $17.95.

In contrast, the living wage corresponds to the amount workers need to live a decent life. The Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN) uses a robust calculation framework to estimate how much workers need to earn to afford basic needs like food, shelter and transportation, as well as modest community participation expenses, such as a modest vacation and after-school activities for the children.
