The Obstacle Is the Instruction

Every bad session teaches you something a good one never will.
I used to hate that fact. Now I build my practice around it.
Marcus Aurelius wrote that the obstacle in the path becomes the path. Not poetry. Instruction. He wasn't talking about Systema, but he might as well have been. The partner who taps you out cleanly, the technique that refuses to click after twenty reps, the day your body simply won't cooperate — none of it means what you think it means in the moment. It only means what you decide it means afterward.

That decision is the whole game.
Epictetus split the world in two: what's up to us, and what isn't. Your effort is up to you. Your partner's skill level is not. Your attention is up to you. How your body feels that day is not. Most of the frustration I see on the mat comes from fighting the second category as if it were the first. You can't will your way past a bad night's sleep or a training partner who's simply better than you today. You can only adjust and keep moving.
I've had sessions where nothing worked. Where every roll ended with me on my back, wondering why I bothered. For years I told myself a story on those days: I'm regressing. I'm not built for this.
That story was a lie, and it cost me nothing to tell myself a truer one.

The truer one: a bad session is information, not a verdict. It shows you exactly where the gap is. It hands you the lesson plan for tomorrow. The student who never gets swept learns nothing about balance. The one who never gets caught learns nothing about timing.

Zhuangzi talks about the butcher who never dulls his blade because he stops fighting the ox and starts working with its natural lines. That's not passivity. That's precision earned by paying attention to what's actually in front of you instead of what you wish were in front of you.

So here's the invitation this week. Take one frustration from your training — a technique that won't land, a position that keeps collapsing on you, whatever it is — and instead of asking "why does this keep happening to me," ask "what is this trying to show me?"

Same event. Different story. Completely different training.
You don't have to pretend the frustration didn't sting. It did. It should. But sit with it long enough, and it hands you something useful, if you let it.

Change what you can change. And where you can't, change how you carry it. Emmanuel Manolakakis

The Sound of Your Strike

In Systema, don’t just focus on making contact—listen to it.

Every strike has a sound. That sound tells a story about your body, your structure, your breathing, and your intention. A clean, relaxed strike has a distinct sound that is very different from one driven by tension or force.

Learn to match the sound to the feeling of the hit.

As you strike a pad or heavy bag, pay attention to what you hear. Then notice what you feel throughout your body. Was your breathing free? Were your shoulders relaxed? Did the power travel from the ground through your body, or did you simply swing your arm?

Over time, you’ll begin to recognize the sound of an efficient strike. When the sound and the feeling align, you’ve found a movement worth repeating.

Don’t chase volume. A loud strike isn’t always an effective one. Instead, seek consistency. The same relaxed movement should produce the same quality of impact, again and again.

Train your ears as much as your hands.

The body can lie. The ego can lie. The sound rarely does.

Listen carefully. Refine patiently. Let every strike teach you something. Emmanuel Manolakakis FightClub

Most people try to win on the ground by using more strength.

In Systema, we learn something different.

Relaxed arms don’t mean weak arms. They mean faster movement, better sensitivity, and less fatigue.

When your arms stay relaxed, you can:
• Feel your partner’s intentions before they move.
• Transition smoothly instead of getting stuck.
• Conserve energy for when it really matters.
• Generate power from your whole body—not just your muscles.
• Stay calm under pressure and make better decisions.

Strength has its place. But relaxation gives you options.

That’s why ground fighting at FightClub isn’t about wrestling harder—it’s about moving smarter.

The study of how to move tension (a grab in this case) with effort (my strength) or relaxation somewhere else that has an effect on the grab. This is not a technique it’s a feeling and awareness upon contact. The mind is not involved as much as the body. Emmanuel Manolakakis FightClub

Knowing your distance is the foundation of martial arts. Too close and you lose structure; too far and you lose opportunity. Mastering range teaches timing, control, and awareness, allowing technique to flow naturally while conserving energy and maintaining safety for everyone Emmanuel Manolakakis FightClub
