I returned to Japan from Toronto few days ago.
I have been most humbly invited to attend the premiere of a new Noh production titled Urushi Noh, for which Princess Akiko of Mikasa is one of the initiators. I will be attending the performance on January 25.
This Noh production serves as support for the Noto Peninsula earthquake recovery and, at the same time, aims to pass urushi culture on to future generations. I believe this represents a distinctly Japanese form of cultural practice with profound significance.
I have loved Noh theatre since my student days and used to attend performances regularly, but after moving to Canada I had drifted away from it. I am very much looking forward to experiencing Noh again after such a long time.
To coincide with this occasion, I will also be giving a lecture.
The event is hosted by Ichikiro no Kai, an organization that supports Japanese-produced urushi, and will be held on February 11 (national holiday) at the Hibiya Library and Museum.
Under the theme of “Connecting Traditional Crafts 200 Years into the Future,” I moved to Canada seven years ago out of a strong sense that opening overseas markets was essential. With no connections or guarantees, I survived the COVID-19 pandemic on my own and have continued to cultivate a growing audience for urushi and traditional crafts. Drawing from this practical experience, I will share the current realities of global cultures and markets, and discuss what kinds of strategies we should adopt going forward.
