A new campaign in Toronto is pushing for the city to introduce “noise cameras” that could automatically detect and penalize excessively loud vehicles, creating major debate among drivers and residents. The proposal gained attention on May 22, 2026.

Advocacy group "No More Noise" is backing the idea, saying loud vehicles, modified exhaust systems, and street racing noise are creating serious quality-of-life problems in neighbourhoods across the city.

Toronto Councillor Lily Cheng introduced a motion, seconded by Councillor Dianne Saxe, calling for provincial support that would allow the use of noise camera enforcement technology. Supporters say similar systems already exist in parts of Europe and can identify vehicles producing excessive noise levels.

The idea comes after major debates over automated traffic enforcement in Ontario. Critics argue cameras become “cash grabs,” while supporters say they improve safety and reduce disturbances.

Some residents say noisy vehicles have become unbearable late at night, while opponents are questioning privacy concerns and whether technology should replace officers.

A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines, on June 8, 2026, triggering tsunami warnings and sending residents across parts of the Philippines and neighboring countries scrambling for information.

According to international monitoring agencies, the earthquake measured approximately magnitude 7.8 and struck offshore west-southwest of Burias, Mindanao, at a depth of about 35 kilometres. Authorities immediately began assessing potential impacts and monitoring coastal areas.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that tsunami waves of up to 3 metres could affect some Philippine coastlines, while smaller waves were possible in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.
