Today! Classi Chats with Joseph Kertes in conversation with Anne Michaels!

Joseph Kertes is a writer who escaped from Hungary with his family to Canada after the revolution of 1956. He studied English at York University and the University of Toronto, where he was encouraged in his writing by Irving Layton and Marshall McLuhan.

His chat today is with celebrated novelist and poet Anne Michaels whose books have been translated into more than 45 languages and have won dozens of international awards.

Held is a critically acclaimed novel by Anne Michaels, exploring love, loss, memory, and trauma across four generations. It is told through narratives spanning from WWI battlefields to modern times, weaving together science, mysticism, and deep human connection. It’s known for its excellent writing and profound themes about how the past haunts the present and the search for meaning beyond our senses.
