As part of Canada's new Tech Talent Strategy, IRCC will be introducing a new open work permit stream for holders of a USA H1-B visa in specialty occupations to apply for a Canadian work permit, and study or work permit options for their accompanying family members.

The new H1-B specialty occupation visa holder work permit will be available as of July 16, 2023. Approved applicants will receive an open work permit of up to three years in duration, which means they will be able to work for almost any employer anywhere in Canada.

This measure will be in place for one year or until 10,000 applications are received.

IRCC announced a new temporary measure which removes the limit on the length of the study programs that temporary foreign workers can enroll in without a study permit.

Individuals who held a valid work permit or had a pending work permit extension application on June 7, 2023 are now eligible to enroll in study programs longer than 6 months without the requirement for a study permit. They may study part time or full time until the end of their work permit.

This will enable foreign workers in Canada to advance their skills and knowledge while they work, boost career development, expand job prospects and opportunities for PR.

"The Government of Canada will introduce new immigration measures to support Sudanese temporary residents who are currently in Canada and may be unable to return home due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in their country.

Once these measures are in place, Sudanese nationals can apply for an extension of their status in Canada and move between temporary streams, allowing them to continue studying, working or visiting family free of charge. These measures would help ensure the continued safety of the Sudanese population already in Canada, keep families together, and give them a safe place to stay. Details will be made available in the days ahead.

The Government of Canada will also prioritize the processing of completed temporary and permanent residence applications already in the system from people still in the country. This includes visitor visa applications for eligible immediate family members of Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents, so they can join their loved ones here.

Canada will also waive passport and permanent resident travel document fees for citizens and permanent residents of Canada in Sudan who wish to leave."

The Public Service Alliance of Canada declared a general strike beginning Wednesday, April 19th. As a result, bargaining groups representing 159,000 public servants are on strike. These employees provide a range of services for the public, including immigration.

During this labour disruption, certain services may be delayed or not delivered at all. As well, the public may have trouble accessing some Government of Canada buildings where services are delivered.

It will still be possible to access IRCC portals, submit applications, and access some emergency services. However, delays in application processing times are expected.

Check for updates and more information about the service disruptions (including processing delays) at the link below.
