Before World War II, the notion of carrying vehicles aboard ships was put into action. The regular link of the premium passenger train, Golden Arrow/Fleche d'Or, from London to Paris by Southern Railway and French Northern Railway commenced in 1926. Four containers were utilized to convey the luggage of travelers. These containers were loaded in London or Paris and transported to ports such as Dover or Calais on flat cars in the United Kingdom and the “CIWL Pullman Golden Arrow Fourgon of CIWL” in France.

McLean decided to commercialize the containers in the early 1950s. By 1952, he was planning to convey his company's vehicles down the Atlantic coast of the United States, from North Carolina to New York.
