GNP Health & Wellness
Located at the Viking Mall, Goose Cove Road, St. Anthony NL. 2nd floor, there is an elevator!
I’ve been perimenopausing. It’s been a trip and has interrupted my sense of self. I’m changing. A friend called it imposter syndrome but it’s more than that or maybe that’s what it is…I don’t know exactly. But one of the things I’m most noticing is that I’m having a hard time talking about my work. Yes, I’m an acupuncturist and wellness coach & somatic guide, but what do I actually DO!?
I’ve been stuttering my words lately, they aren’t sufficient. When I sit with my clients the words I choose are for them, specifically. The way I empathize and they read that in my face an eyes communicates the care and compassion. Whatever they choose to bring into the room is what we treat.
I learn through them, through my own experience of living a human life & how we connect and share in healing. This is the path & I’m finding that words aren’t enough. That presence is the best I got to offer and to be honest that I too am affected, imperfect and tired of the oppressive forces. However, I still choose to show up, right here, Q***r, perimenopausal, childless by choice, settler, solo, caretaker of a canine, health care provider. Yes. That’s me.

Why bother?
The other day after talking to a friend in Labrador from the Philippines, I happened to see a Philippino/Asian store & popped in.
I love food! And am often annoyed when I see cool stores like this with fun food inside and have no idea how to prepare.
But I did find mung beans & quite honestly, they couldn’t come at a better time.
This last month has been moving St. John’s apartments, driving back to the GNP, dipping back to Salmonier Line for a workshop, back to the GNP & back now to my St. John’s apartment, settling, mostly trying to settle my belly.
You know how it is, road trip food, extra coffee, moms home cooking, big family fish fry, quick work snacks, dinners with friends and overeating cause it’s all good & I love to eat.
And then tummy upset, a combo of loose stool and constipation & for my body is mouth ulcers. As the weather warms up and if my diet is funky, I get those symptoms.
Stomach Heat we call it in TCM.
Other symptoms include intense thirst and hunger, acid reflux & anxiety, among other things.
Certainly I had the hunger and the thirst (which I was obviously overindulging) but it was those damn mouth ulcers that were the bother.
And so, we circle back to mung beans. When patients book their first assessment I’ve started to ask if they want lifestyle guidance & that includes food. It’s a part of how we practice medicine and learning through my own experience and those of my patients, is what I offer.
So now…back to Mung Beans;
They are a great summer protein, versatile, quick to soak & cook & easy to Sprout.
Most importantly for me right now, maybe you too, is that they are cooling. They cool the heat in the stomach & by cooling the heat help heal ulcers.
Ta da. Food as medicine is really a thing. Food as the cause of dis’ease is also a thing, but when you love food as much as I do, it’s easy to ignore the fact that what we choose to eat can weaken our digestive system, weaken our immune system and can cause bowel inflammation and mouth ulcers, among the many other daily complaints. It really does start with the food we eat & water.
Don’t even get me started on the importance of water;)
Anyway, hope you find this interesting, I do love to share;)
Here’s what I made yesterday, inspired by my friends suggestion on how her family prepares mung bean!
Mung Bean Summer Stew
Sautéed onion & red pepper.
A little paprika & cayene (another post on cayene later but when choosing heat, cayene over Chili)
Chopped Carrot
Big Bunch of chopped fresh Rainbow chard from the St. John's Farmers' Market
Massive bunch of chopped cilantro (you can replace with parsley if you get the soap reaction to cilantro)
Some seaweed flakes
(I add seaweed to all beans)
And 2 cups of soaked, sprouting mung beans
(They don’t have to sprout, they can just be soaked, but I like the added enzymes of sprouting seed)
And veggie stock.
(To be honest, I don’t like a lot of liquid so I just use enough to soften and cook the bean. You can make it as wet as you like)
Salt to taste and Yum!
I shared this meal with a friend and brunch & they also found it delicious.
Some of the beans I extra sprouted. You can add them to salads, they have a slightly bitter taste when raw, which is good for the liver.
And some of them I decided I would Make into a veggie pattie.
You can look that up online. Or I’ll write about it next time.
I gotta take River for a walk;)
