Are you looking for something to do on the October 23rd non-instructional day? Come to the library and imagine, plan, create, and test your own engineering experiments! Who will create the tallest paper tower? Come find out!

This drop-in non-instructional day program is open to all school-aged children, tweens and teens. Supplies provided; no registration required. This program is generously sponsored by the Town of Smithers.

October is Canadian Library Month and this year's theme is Loud for Libraries!

All month long, libraries and library partners across Canada are raising awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. More than just a place to find books, libraries promote cultural awareness, engage in the community, provide educational programs, support freedom of expression and so much more.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day are both observed annually on September 30th, and they are dedicated to honouring Residential School Survivors, their families, and communities, and to recognize the lasting impacts of Canada’s Residential School system.

We encourage you to wear orange today in honour of Residential School Survivors and their families, and in remembrance of the children who never returned home.

The Smithers District Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with CICK 93.9 FM | CICK News, will host the 2026 Municipal All-Candidates Forum on Thursday, October 8th at the Della Herman Theatre (see details below).

This event will give community members an opportunity to hear directly from candidates about their priorities, perspectives and vision for Smithers and Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Electoral Area A. Come listen and ask questions so you can make informed choices at the ballot box on Saturday, October 17.

Last weekend we hosted the annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea to thank all of the amazing people who graciously volunteer their time to support various aspects of the library. From Front Desk volunteers who organize and shelve books, to the "VolunTEENS" who help deliver kids programs, to the Friends of the Smithers Library who tirelessly hold fundraisers and write grants to support the library, to the Library Board who oversees our governance and strategic direction... we could not operate this library without them!

In true Bulkley Valley fashion, one of the prizes (claimed by a teen) was a giant zucchini from the garden of our fearless Volunteer Coordinator, Erin Cockriell.

A huge THANK YOU to Big Smiles Kids Store for generously donating the proceeds from last Saturday's Jigsaw Competition to the library. The funds will go towards the New Library Renovation Project to help fill the new building with all the furniture, fixtures and equipment it needs to be a comfortable, accessible space for all ages and abilities.

The Smithers Public Library Board is currently seeking three (3) new Board Members. The Board is responsible for providing overall direction to the Library to ensure relevant, comprehensive and efficient service to the community.
