Muscle is Medicine: How You Receive Matters
Massage works best when your body is involved in the process.
In my massage practice, I see a few common patterns.
Some people drift.
The body softens, but awareness fades into the background.
Some people guard. They stay still, but the muscles hold and don’t fully release.
And sometimes, people are present. The body is relaxed, aware, and responsive. Breath moves, muscles adapt and subtle changes start to happen.
This is where muscle becomes medicine.
It happens when the nervous system is settled enough to allow change.
When you stay present, your breath begins to support the work. The body responds instead of resisting. There’s a natural feedback loop between what you feel and how your body adjusts.
That might look like a slow exhale as pressure builds. Noticing when you’re holding, and softening when you’re able. Staying with the sensation instead of leaving your body.
If your body continues to guard, that’s useful feedback. Sometimes it simply means the pressure needs to change.
Receiving massage isn’t a passive experience. It’s a process of awareness, breathing, communication, and allowing your body to respond in its own time.
Next time you’re on the table, just notice one thing, your breath, a sensation, or where you might be holding. Let that be enough. 💛

You don’t have to explain everything you’re carrying. Sometimes your body just needs an hour where it doesn’t have to work so hard.
A place to lie down, breathe, and receive the attention it’s been asking for.
No pressure. No expectations. Just time to reconnect with your body and give it the support it needs. 💛

Could your muscles be part of the conversation when it comes to managing arthritis?
When we think about arthritis, we often focus on the joint itself. But the muscles surrounding that joint play an important role in how our bodies move and feel.
When a joint becomes painful or stiff, the body naturally begins to adapt. The muscles around that area may tighten, work harder, or become restricted as they try to protect and support the movement.
For example, with knee arthritis, the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and hip muscles may all become involved. With hip arthritis, the glutes, hip flexors, and low back may contribute to tension and changes in mobility.
This is where massage therapy can help.
Massage does not reverse arthritis, rebuild cartilage, or stop the progression of the condition. What it can do is support the muscles and soft tissues around affected areas, helping reduce tension, improve comfort, and support easier movement.
Every person’s body is different. With inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, especially during periods of increased swelling and sensitivity, treatment needs to be adapted with gentle techniques and careful communication.
The goal is not to “fix” arthritis.
The goal is to support your body, improve comfort, and help you move through your day with more ease.
Your muscles are part of your body’s support system. When we care for them, we support the way we move through life.

Today I worked with someone whose pain wasn’t where they thought it was. That part is more common than people realize.
The body is efficient. It points to the loudest signal, not always the source.
Sometimes less pressure, applied in the right place, changes everything.

Muscle is Medicine.
Muscle is not just structure, it’s communication
Most people think of muscle as something mechanical that just supports posture, movement, and strength.
But muscle is constantly responding to what the nervous system is experiencing. It reflects load, stress, repetition, recovery, and even the patterns we fall into without noticing.
What often gets called “tightness” is rarely random.
It’s usually a message.
A sign that certain areas have been doing more work than they were designed to handle for too long, or that the body has adapted to repeated demands by holding tension as a form of support or protection.
Even what people describe as “knots” is often the body adjusting to those patterns over time, organizing itself around strain, rather than resisting it.
Nothing about this is the body working against you.
Instead of seeing tension as something that is wrong, it starts to make more sense as something that is communicating.
And when you start to understand what the body is communicating, the way you care for it changes completely.
