Huge congratulations to Ryan Barfoot on receiving the EECOM Award of Excellence for Outstanding Educator! 👏 Your leadership continues to inspire learners here in qathet and across BC. 🌿
🎉 We’re thrilled to close our 2024-2025 EECOM Awards by honoring Ryan Barfoot, environmental leader and educator from qathet (Powell River), British Columbia, as the recipient of the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Educator!
For over 25 years, Ryan has inspired learners across British Columbia, bringing education out of the classroom and into the land, water, and communities around them. From hands-on outdoor learning to sustainability programs, he helps students and educators connect head, heart, and hands - fostering curiosity, care, and real-world action.
As Chair of the Outdoor Council of Canada and co-founder of the Classrooms to Communities Society of BC, Ryan’s leadership strengthens ecological literacy, community connection, and long-term impact, showing that environmental learning is about belonging, stewardship, and meaningful change.
Congratulations to Ryan for shaping a generation of learners who see themselves as active participants in the world around them!

This artcle reminded me of the incredible learning happening right here in qSD47. Teachers are engaged in meaningful inquiry and collaboration—exploring topics like counselling-informed practices, play-based learning, fostering student independence, land-based and Indigenous learning, technology tools, career pathways, communication, and more! While not all of this work is connected directly to BCTF TIP this year, qSD47 has participated in the BCTF Teacher Inquiry Program for the past several years, with projects that have been thoughtful, impactful, and strongly teacher-driven.
This year alone, there are dozens of inquiry projects and collaborative groups underway across the district. This article is a helpful reminder of the power of inquiry—and a reflection of the learning culture we continue to build together. 💫

Often considered taboo subjects for public conversation, stories of faith, religion, wonder, doubt and spirit have the power to strengthen our core identities and connect us with others. For those who are older and who wish to share our legacy with others, memoirs are ideal.
