Sketching concepts for a new project… artistically manipulating the land to create new experiences that work with, rather than against, existing drainage patterns✨

Every contour, every spot elevation shapes how people move, how water moves, and how the landscape will function over time. In collaboration with the project team, grading is design. Good grading = technical know-how + site design + ecological sensitivity 👌🌳💧📐🤔

Gardens are dynamic landscapes—through design, they can look beautiful in every season. One of our shoreline regeneration projects is coming to life as the snow recedes. A highlight: seeing the elusive bloodroot in bloom (flowers last one 1-2 days) nestled with Cornus sericea on the ridge of the large rain garden.

Designing public art goes beyond creativity—it demands an understanding of structure, safety, and accessibility.

Join me Sunday, April 25 for Making Artworks Safe + Inclusive, part of Public Art Workshop Series. It’s free! 🔗 in bio.

Drawing on my experience designing freestanding structures for private and public landscapes, we’ll explore the elements that support and shape the creative process—flanges, fasteners, footings, ramps, guardrails, and surfaces.

We’ll also look at the human and environmental forces that impact outdoor works, helping you develop a stronger language around structural systems and inclusive design.

The earlier these considerations are integrated into your process, the more seamlessly they become part of your vision. The result? Stronger grant proposals, more resolved and compelling artworks, and a thoughtful, efficient approach to materials and site.

Create work that’s not only beautiful—but resilient, responsible, and built to last.

Big thanks to for capturing the vision, journey and hard work behind this amazing project. It’s been an honour to work alongside an incredible client team, Hilditch Architects the consultants, suppliers, trades and builders that brought the Sumac Community Food Centre to life in Gerrard East. Soon the gardens will emerge and we will see Sumac!! 🌱
