A quick hours update for today!

Perth Museum and the Visitor Information Centre will be open from 10–11:15 a.m. today only.

After that, our team is heading out for a little field trip! We’ll be visiting Bellevue House National Historic Site, Parks Canada use to learn about their recent renovations, community engagement initiatives and programming — gathering ideas and inspiration that we can bring back to Perth.

It’s also a chance for our team to celebrate a busy summer season together. 🎉

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Regular hours resume tomorrow, and we look forward to welcoming you back!

Perth Museum is teaming up with the Perth Fair for a FREE drop-in craft day on Thursday, August 27!

Bring the kids to Perth Museum to make crafts that can be entered into the Perth Fair. It’s an easy and fun way to give young makers a chance to create something special—and be part of one of Perth’s favourite traditions!

Thank you to everyone who shared a guess this week—you came up with some fantastic ideas!

The mystery artifact is an ornate bronze string holder. It was designed to hold a ball of string, making it easy to pull out and cut the perfect length for tying parcels and packages. Practical, elegant, and a beautiful example of everyday Victorian design.

This particular piece once belonged to Peter McLaren, a prominent Perth businessman, mill owner, and politician who served as a Senator from 1896 until his death in 1919. His contributions helped shape both the local community and Canadian public life.

Trivia Tuesday at Perth Museum!

This week's item is a double leather gunpowder bag. Made from thick, moulded leather, it was designed to be lightweight, durable, and quiet to carry through the woods—an important feature for hunters trying to avoid making noise. (It has a strap that would allow it to be carried over the shoulder or across the body).

The top is fitted with a metal measuring spout, allowing the user to dispense a consistent amount of gunpowder directly into the barrel of a flintlock or percussion cap firearm. Before modern cartridges, carrying powder safely and measuring it accurately was an essential part of every hunting trip.
