The year 2026 marks 30 years since the last federally run residential school in Canada closed its doors in 1996. Every year on September 30, we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - an opportunity for all people living in Canada to pause and reflect on the history of residential “schools”, where over 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were forcefully removed from their families and culture and subjected to unspeakable violence.
Committing to continued education is a vital step in honouring the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities, and to remember the children who never returned home. Learn more and take further action at egale.ca/truth-and-reconciliation/

Image: The Survivors’ Flag (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation) is an expression of remembrance, meant to honour residential school Survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada. Each element depicted on the flag was carefully selected by Survivors from across Canada, who were consulted in the flag’s creation.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we acknowledge that commemoration events can bring up difficult emotions. If you or someone you know needs support, know that help is available. In that spirit, we share this list of mental health resources. You are not alone.
