The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO)
We Stand By Our Words
---------------------
The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) promotes the language professions and the value of certification as a means to protect the public interest. OUR VISION
To ensure that language professionals are certified and available to provide quality language services in all languages throughout Ontario. OUR HISTORY
ATIO is the oldest organization of translators, conference interpreters, court interpreters, terminologists, community interpreters and medical interpreters in Canada. It was founded in 1920 as the Association technologique de langue française d’Ottawa, and incorporated the following year under Ontario Letters Patent. We are the first translators’ association in the world whose certified members are deemed professionals by law, for in February 1989 the Province of Ontario granted reserved title for certified members of ATIO through the Association of Translators and Interpreters Act, 1989. The main purpose of the Association is to promote a high level of competence in translation, terminology and interpretation. OUR OBJECTIVES
To provide a collective voice for its members;
To promote the professional development of its members;
To ensure that members exercise high standards of ethical conduct;
To publicize the role performed by its members in society;
To establish standards of competency and certification examinations and to monitor the quality of the professional services rendered by its members;
To examine any complaints received that pertain to the competence or professional conduct of a member;
To support and protect the collective status, dignity and integrity of professional translators, interpreters and terminologists;
To provide its members with services designed to meet their professional needs; and
To maintain amicable and professional relations with similar organizations inside and outside Canada. OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD
ATIO and its sister provincial organizations comprise the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), which is a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT). FIT, a worldwide organization, is composed of the many national translation organizations, and has earned the status of an official UNESCO consultative agency (NGO Category A).

MISSION

As more work continues to move into digital spaces, professional tools are evolving alongside it.

The ATIO e-stamp service was introduced as part of ATIO’s ongoing commitment to modernizing our practices and enhancing service delivery for both members and the public.

Alongside the self-inking stamp and embossing seal, the e-stamp strengthens the way certified translations are authenticated while supporting secure, traceable and trustworthy electronic documents.
With built-in encryption and traceability, the e-stamp helps support the integrity of certified translations while also helping protect against stamp misuse.

It also offers greater flexibility and convenience for members working with electronic documents.
Since its launch, the service has continued to grow, and we are grateful to the many members who have explored and supported the e-stamp in their professional practice.

Members can also explore the e-stamp page for additional information about the service, verification features, available resources and support materials available through the member portal.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who have helped support ATIO’s in-person exams! 👏
This spring, volunteers assisted with ATIO’s Entrance Exam sittings as well as the recent Certification Exam. Their time, professionalism, and dedication help ensure that our exams run smoothly and successfully.
ATIO holds two in-person Entrance Exam sittings and two Certification Exam sittings each year, and volunteers play an essential role in supporting these sessions. Volunteering is also a great way for members to contribute to their professional association and support the language professions community.
Interested in volunteering as an exam invigilator? We would love to hear from you!
Please contact us at [email protected] for more information about volunteer opportunities.

Did you know that certification through ATIO is not always obtained through the certification exam?

ATIO also offers an on-dossier certification pathway. Depending on the professional category, this pathway may be the only certification option available or an alternative chosen by the candidate.

In this post, an ATIO-certified member shares her experience with the on-dossier process and her advice for future applicants. 🎉

We saw the “Millennial marketing vs. Gen Z marketing” trend and obviously had to try it. 😅

At ATIO, we’re lucky to have members from different generations of language professionals — from interpreters who started working before Wi-Fi existed to translators who can edit a glossary, answer emails, and make a Reel at the same time.

Different styles. Same professionalism. ❤️

-------------------------------------------
