Stop Trying to Make It Big in Music Why building a career matters more than chasing fame

Great to see so many friends and former colleagues at the BC NDP Forward conference.

Now that the BC Conservative party has coalesced around a far-right leader in Kerry-Lynne Findley, there’s clearly a lot at stake for British Columbia.

Yes, things are challenging right now in the world and in British Columbia, however, we cannot go back to the 2001-2017 conservative era - or worse. Back then tax cuts for the most wealthy led to cuts in services, healthcare, education, and a lack of critical infrastructure investment in roads, housing, hospitals, and schools.

The BCNDP is and will continue to be committed to making life more affordable for everyone, improve healthcare outcomes, build the infrastructure that we need with a growing population, and deal with the housing crisis, especially for young people and seniors.

An economy is only strong if it works for everyone. 

The BC conservatives believe that BC is bankrupt and in decline. They say that indigenous people are going to take people‘s private property. They believe that they can cut the budget and somehow improve healthcare, housing and education. None of this is true. Having a big budget to spread misinformation on social media does not make a party right, just irresponsible.

Clearly, there’s a lot of work to do to make life better for the people of British Columbia, but from the Forward Conference and the spirit of the people who attended, I truly believe that things are going to be better over the next two years.

Amplify BC is an important provincial program for the music industry in British Columbia. In fact, it’s the only program for the music industry in British Columbia. It should be renewed in the next Budget cycle. 

Other creative industry sectors enjoy hundreds of millions of dollars of tax credits, which are also very important and should be maintained, but this $7.5 million a year Fund administered by Creative BC is critical to the continued development of the BC music industry.

Amplify BC funding is set to expire—and former parliamentary secretary Bob D'Eith says it should be renewed - Pancouver Amplify BC is the only provincial funding program exclusively targeted at independent musicians and the sound and recording industry.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mel Zajac. Pam Alexis and I had the pleasure of working with Mel while in office and witnessed firsthand his generosity, vision, and deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. We both attended his celebration of life today.

My thoughts are with the Zajac family and all those who knew and loved him. His legacy lives on through his family and through the remarkable work of Zajac Ranch, which has brought joy, inclusion, and life-changing experiences to countless children and families. He will be greatly missed.
