Just like people dogs in old age - have deserve as much respect in their own age as our own elders do :)

He didn’t bark. He didn’t jump. He didn’t even look up when the family walked in. He knew the routine.

The family went straight to the kennel on the left. It was full of 8-week-old Husky puppies. There was squealing, tail wagging, and “Awws.” In the next cage, the 11-year-old Husky, Barnaby, just let out a heavy sigh and closed his eyes.

“Don’t mind him,” the volunteer told the family. “He’s just… waiting out his time. He’s been here 400 days.”

400 days. That’s 400 days of watching everyone else get picked. 400 days of being “too old,” “too slow,” or “too sad.”

The dad of the family looked at the puppies. Then he looked at the quiet gray-and-white Husky lying in the next cage. He walked over to the bars. Barnaby didn’t move. He thought he was invisible.

The man reached his hand through the wire. Barnaby’s old nose twitched. Slowly, painfully, he lifted his head. He gently pressed his forehead against the man’s fingers.

“I don’t want a puppy,” the man said to the volunteer. “I want him.”

The volunteer dropped her clipboard. “Barnaby? But… he has arthritis. He sleeps 20 hours a day.”

“Perfect,” the man smiled. “So do I.”

Barnaby walked out of the shelter today. He didn’t run. He walked slowly. But when he got to the car, he looked back at the shelter, then up at his new dad, and gave the biggest, goofiest smile of his life.

He wasn’t invisible. He was just waiting for the right person to see him.
