πŸ” October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a nationwide initiative that encourages Canadians to build safer online habits through education and practical action. This year's theme, "Your best defence is you," highlights the critical role individuals play in preventing cyber incidents. Simple steps like recognizing phishing attempts, using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and protecting sensitive information can significantly reduce risk.

This month, we'll be sharing practical advice to help businesses strengthen their security posture and build a more resilient future.

Fortify is excited to welcome a new face (and Helpdesk voice!) to our Service Team, Ben Evans! πŸŽ‰

We asked Ben to tell us a little about himself:

"My journey in technology began at age 12, driven by a need to understand how hardware and software work under the hood. What started with breaking and rebuilding workstations evolved into a deep interest of networking, security research, and hands-on troubleshooting.

As I settle into Fortify, I'm grateful for the opportunity to apply years of independent learning in a real-world environment while continuing to grow alongside an experienced team. Fortify aligns closely with the way I've always learned: get curious about a problem, figure out why it happened, rebuild it, and come away knowing more than before.

Outside of work, I enjoy developing independent security tools in Python and Rust and exploring lower-level security concepts such as Ring 0 telemetry and payload detection. Whether professionally or on my own time, I'm always looking for something new to learn, build, or improve."

To a cybercriminal, yesterday's technology can still be today's opportunity.

The question isn't whether old equipment exists. It's whether it's been properly secured or disposed of.

Most organizations have a process for onboarding new employees. Fewer have a consistent process for removing access when someone leaves.

πŸ’‘ Technology Tip: Implement proactive account monitoring to ensure only active users retain access, review all user accounts quarterly and disable anything that isn't actively being used.

A good cybersecurity habit is to review your browser extensions every few months, just like you would review old software, unused accounts, or outdated devices.

The reality is that cybercriminals don't always need sophisticated malware to gain access. Sometimes they take advantage of permissions we've already granted.
