19th CENTURY - PRECISION IN PRINT
As printing advanced, crop marks became standardized to show printers where to trim for the final size.

20th CENTURY - THE RISE FO BLEED
With full-colour printing, bleeds were introduced to prevent white edges from showing after trimming.
