A lady came into my shop this week, deeply distressed. Her external hard drive, full of important files and memories, had stopped working. She had just come from another local shop where she was quoted $700 for a data recovery attempt, with absolutely no guarantee of success.

She was prepared to either lose her data forever or pay a small fortune with her fingers crossed. She brought it to Icon Computers for a second opinion.

Before beginning a complex and costly recovery process, I did what should always be done first: I actually inspected the hardware. I immediately noticed that the USB cable was frayed and, more importantly, the port on the drive's plastic case felt loose.

Often, the problem isn't the sensitive hard drive itself, but the cheap enclosure it's housed in.

So, I simply opened up the case, carefully took out her perfectly healthy hard drive, and placed it into a new enclosure. I plugged it in, and every single one of her files was there, safe and sound. A problem that another shop defined as a $700 data recovery nightmare was solved in minutes with the right diagnosis.
