One of the questions I receive most often is: where should we do the maternity session?

My answer is always the same. Start by thinking about how you want to remember this chapter.

Some parents are drawn to the simplicity of a studio. Others feel connected to nature, a lakeside view, a park, or a location with a unique atmosphere. Some want the comfort and meaning of home.

Each setting brings something different to the images, and there is no single right choice. The best location is the one that feels authentic to you and reflects this season of life in a way that feels personal.

Years from now, the photos will bring you back to this moment. Choosing a place that feels like your story is part of what makes that memory meaningful.

There is something I always notice when photographing girls, whether it is during a family session, a maternity session, a birthday or simply an ordinary day documented with intention.

They pay attention to being seen.

Many of them arrive curious, sometimes shy, sometimes full of ideas, and little by little they start to enjoy having a space that is theirs. A space where they feel important, included and valued.

Years later, the photos become more than a record of how they looked. They become a reminder that they were part of the story, that their presence mattered, and that someone took the time to preserve this stage of their childhood.

That is one of the reasons I love photographing girls as they grow. The images stay, and so does the feeling of being remembered.

You are watching them grow faster than you expected, and each phase is already giving space to the next.

What once felt small starts to change. The routines shift. The way they move, play and interact is never exactly the same for long.

You don’t need a special date to document this. Growth itself is the reason.

These photos become a way to return to what today still feels normal, but won’t stay the same.

Summer changes the atmosphere of outdoor sessions completely. The beaches become lighter, the lakes quieter, and the evenings stretch a little longer with that soft seasonal light.

I especially love beach sessions during this time. The movement of the water, the open space, the wind and the natural tones create an environment where families, couples and maternity sessions feel very natural and relaxed.

But summer also opens space for photos in parks, trails and lakeside areas, where people tend to move more freely and enjoy simply being together outdoors.

This season always brings a different energy to the images, and it is one of my favorite times to photograph outside.

Most couple sessions I photograph happen around expected moments. A wedding, an anniversary, Valentine’s Day. And those are all valid reasons to book a session. But some of my favorite ones had no occasion at all. A Saturday in winter, a kitchen mid-renovation, a warm afternoon with nothing planned. The relationship does not need a milestone to be worth photographing. Sometimes just being together is enough.

If that resonates with you, send me a message and let’s talk about your session.

Those little folds on a baby’s hands never go unnoticed by me. The tiny fingers, the soft skin, the way the hands still stay naturally curled in those first weeks.

These details change quietly and much faster than parents expect. That is why I always make space for close-ups like these during a session.

Later, the photos become a reminder of how unbelievably small they once were.

There is something funny and unforgettable about newborn expressions during sleep. Tiny smiles, serious faces, stretched lips, little reactions that last only a few seconds and disappear just as quickly.

During newborn sessions, I pay close attention to these moments because they are part of what makes each baby unique from the very beginning. Parents usually remember these expressions so clearly in the first weeks, and later the photos become a way to revisit them again.

Some babies sleep peacefully the entire session. Others react to every touch, sound or position. And honestly, that is part of the fun of photographing this phase.

Seeing Tobias now at 11 months makes me think about how much has already changed since his first session with me. Over this past year, I watched his expressions become stronger, his personality appear more clearly and his connection with his parents grow in such a natural way.

This winter session was full of smiles from all three of them. Tobias was engaged with everything around him, reacting to his parents constantly, and those interactions shaped the atmosphere of the photos more than anything else.

Following a baby through different stages always gives a different weight to the images. After a while, the sessions stop feeling separate and start becoming part of the family’s story.

This Mother’s Day feels different for me.

Being behind the camera while also living these first moments as a mother again gave new meaning to everything I already believed about photography. The tiny details, the sleepy newborn stage, the need to hold onto a phase that changes so quickly.

Creating these images with Giovanni reminded me why I care so much about documenting the beginning of a baby’s story. One day, these photos will bring us back to how small he was, how quiet those days felt, and how much love already existed in every little moment.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mom living, remembering, or waiting for this chapter 💛

When I photographed Consuelo and her husband, I chose to keep everything simple. The white background, the soft curtains, the quiet light. It allowed me to focus on how they were together in this moment of waiting.

There is something very particular about this phase. The connection is already there, even before the baby arrives.

With Mother’s Day approaching, I find myself paying even more attention to these beginnings, where motherhood is already present in a quiet and steady way.
