Two of my children were born at this hospital in Ottawa, Canada which 74 years ago was briefly declared extra territorial - that is not Canada. This was done so Princess Juliana of the Netherlands, who was sent to Canada during the second World War to keep her safe after the N**i invasion of the Netherlands, could give birth to a Dutch child. She delivered a baby girl, Princess Margreit. Tradition has followed ever since that the Netherlands annually sends tulip bulbs to Canada in gratitude for the safe harbour of the Dutch royals. In the spring Ottawa is awash with beautiful beds of tulips.
Below is the recollection of this event by the physician who delivered Princess Margreit.

The other day my youngest got in trouble for doing something mildly naughty. Then he felt terrible about it, forgetting that all kids do things they should not and that we learn by making mistakes. It led to a beautiful discussion of stories of things I should not have done when I was little. Then a few days later he whispered in my ear, "remember when you were little and you...".
Why children need to know their family history I’ve been inspired by research that suggests knowing the intimate facts of our family histories makes us more healthy emotionally

This brings back memories of travels in a pre-smartphone camera era. Giddy kids would ask to have their photo taken. After waiting for a nod of approval from their guardian, I'd get my camera ready. Through the lens I would be surprised to see formal, straight faced poses. No smiles! Seconds after the photo the kids were back to giggling. Now I think I understand why.

My grandmother passed away a year ago today yet I still have thoughts of sending her pics and stories of her great-grandsons. Then I remind myself that she's not here. I miss hearing her stories too and wish I had launched this business a few years earlier. She could've been my first client. She would have loved it.
