Your body often knows before your mind is willing to admit it.

The room where your shoulders drop.
The conversation where your jaw tightens.
The object you cannot throw away.
The chair you always choose.
The clothes that make you feel like you have returned to yourself.
The house that looks lovely but makes you feel like a guest.

We are very good at explaining things away.

It is fine.
It makes sense.
It is practical.
It is what people expect.
It is not worth making a fuss.

But the body keeps a quieter record.

It knows where you perform.
It knows where you belong.
It knows what costs too much.
It knows the difference between impressive and inhabitable.

Soul Decor: At Home in Your Own Skin follows that thread.

Home.
Objects.
Body.
Memory.
Humour.
Visible humanity.

The ordinary signals that tell us whether we are actually present in our own lives.

Norma the Sassy Seagull | SaltSpray Design 06/11/2026

Norma - Coastal Folk Art With Attitude

Long legs. Strong stance. Absolutely no interest in blending in.

Norma is the kind of seagull who has seen things, survived things, and still turns up looking faintly unimpressed by the whole performance.

She is weathered, slightly awkward, and completely herself.

After a long and fairly dramatic life, she may be showing her years — but her legs are still her best feature, and frankly, she knows it.

That is the charm of Norma.

She does not try to look elegant.
She does not try to look polished.
She does not ask whether she belongs on your shelf, railing, mantel, or desk.

She simply arrives.

Part coastal bird, part attitude problem, part reminder that getting older does not mean getting quieter.

Norma is one of my handmade quirky critters — sculpted in paper mâché, layered, painted, and finished in weathered coastal colours.

Lightweight, sturdy, and made to live somewhere visible.

Because some pieces do not decorate a room quietly.

They start conversations.

Handmade. No two alike.

This book is not asking you to become a better version of yourself.

Honestly, most women have been trying to become better versions of themselves for decades and are understandably exhausted.

Better face.
Better body.
Better mood.
Better home.
Better schedule.
Better boundaries.
Better gratitude.
Better everything.

At some point, the project becomes suspicious.

What if the problem is not that you are unfinished?

What if the problem is that you have been over-managed?

Soul Decor does not begin with improvement.

It begins with recognition.

Where have you become too edited?
Where does your home no longer feel like you?
Where did your humour go?
Where did your body stop feeling invited?
Where are you performing a life instead of participating in one?

That is enough to begin.

Not better.

More honestly inhabited.

Some women do not disappear all at once.

They disappear by becoming agreeable in tiny, socially rewarded ways.

A softer answer.
A smaller laugh.
A neutral room.
A swallowed opinion.
A body hidden before anyone comments.
A preference explained so thoroughly it no longer sounds like a preference.

And everyone says she is doing well.

That is the problem.

Edited living can look very responsible from the outside.

It can look like maturity.
Good manners.
Success.
Taste.
Peacekeeping.
Being easy to love.

But inside, it can feel like slow absence.

Soul Decor: At Home in Your Own Skin is about that quiet disappearance. And the return. Not through grand reinvention.
Through ordinary acts of inhabiting:

Choosing what feels true.
Keeping what remembers you.
Letting your home show evidence of your life.
Allowing the body you actually have to participate.
Becoming less smooth.
More visible.
More here.

Monday has a particular sound.

The kettle.
The inbox.
The shoes by the door.
The small internal click as the acceptable version of yourself steps back into place.

Not fake, exactly.

More like edited.

A little less opinion.
A little more useful.
A little more reasonable.
A little more available.
A little easier to approve of.

Most women are not consciously performing their lives. They are adapting.

To work.
To family.
To expectation.
To politeness.
To the room.

And adaptation can be intelligent. Until it starts costing too much.

Your voice.
Your rest.
Your humour.
Your body.
Your preferences.
Your private sense of being alive.

That is one of the places where Soul Decor: At Home in Your Own Skin begins.

With the ordinary Monday question:

How much of myself do I leave behind before I even begin the day?

A shelf can tell on you.

So can a hallway.
A kitchen table.
A windowsill.
A chair with the wrong cushion that somehow feels right.

Our homes are not neutral.

They hold evidence.

Of what we welcome.
What we hide.
What we inherited.
What we protect.
What we have outgrown but still tolerate.
What parts of ourselves are allowed to be visible.

A home can look finished and still not feel inhabited.

That sentence matters.

Because many people have learned how to create rooms that are acceptable, tasteful, and emotionally thin.

Soul Decor asks for something else.

Not mess for the sake of mess.
Not clutter as personality.
Not performance in the other direction.

Just honesty, a home that lets you breathe because it has stopped pretending not to know you.

There is a particular kind of tired that does not come from doing too much.t comes from managing yourself too much.

Your tone.
Your face.
Your usefulness.
Your opinions.
Your availability.
Your reasonable response to unreasonable things.

By the weekend, many women are not simply tired. They are relieved.Relieved to stop being quite so many acceptable versions of themselves.
No need to be impressive.
No need to soften the sentence.
No need to explain the preference before having it.
No need to make everyone else comfortable with the fact that you exist.

And sometimes, in that small gap, something returns. Not dramatically.
Just a small flicker.

Oh.
There I am.

That is part of what Soul Decor: At Home in Your Own Skin is about. Not reinvention.A more inhabited life.

Some objects are not impressive. They are just loyal. They sit there quietly holding a version of you that almost disappeared.

A bowl.
A mask.
A bird.
A chipped thing.
A stone from a place you still miss.
A ridiculous object that makes no sense to anyone else.
A handmade figure with a face that looks slightly too knowing.

These things are not clutter when they still carry truth. They are coordinates.
- They remind you where you have been.
- What you survived.
- Who you were before you became so reasonable.
- What made you laugh.
- What you refused to let become tidy.

That is why I keep coming back to the phrase:

Objects that remember you. Because sometimes the things we keep know something before we do.

A life can look fine and still feel strangely uninhabited. That is one of the quiet truths behind Soul Decor.
Not failed.
Not broken.
Not dramatic.

Fine.

The bills are paid.
The house functions.
The people are cared for.
The emails are answered.
The face is reasonable.
The calendar is full.

The whole thing appears to be working. And yet. Somewhere inside it, you may feel like you have become less visible to yourself.
Still there, obviously.

But softer around the edges.
More edited.
More useful.
Less odd.
Less rested.
Less honest.
Less here.

That kind of absence is hard to explain because nothing is technically wrong.

But your body knows.

Your home often knows too.

Update

25th June does not suit many so next options are July 2 or July 7?

Thought?

I’m hosting my very first sculptural talk on Keeper of the Light at the end of June at the Chezzetcook studio and I’d love to invite a small group of customers to be there. It’s a private event by email invitation only, on Thursday 25 June, with a relaxed wine-and-cheese evening and a proper look into some of the stories behind my work — the sculptures, the humour, the odd little truths that keep showing up in paper mâché and paste. There are only 30 spots, so please let me know if you’d like to come. I’d be very glad to have you there.
