New to the Huron County Museum collection!

This award plaque is from a Tug-of-War match between Huron and Bruce Counties in the early 1900s. The plaque originally belonged to George Thomas Burgess, who was born in Lucknow.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, tug-of-war matches were held annually in Lucknow between men from Huron County and men from Bruce County. As Lucknow is situated on the border between both counties, residents from either side of the county lines would compete during the annual event. Notably, the tug-of-war match in 1890 lasted for an hour and a quarter, according to the Sept. 26, 1890 issue of the Lucknow Sentinel, while the match in 1883 lasted less than a minute and was won by Huron County, after falling to Bruce County the previous six years (as recorded in the Huron Signal, Sept. 14, 1883).
