The Meowl Meme From 2013 Is Now at the Center of the AI Slop Debate

The Meowl meme, a bizarre image showing a cat’s head attached to an owl’s body, was created long before generative AI became mainstream. A Weibo user named zhumaokele made the image on April 28, 2013, using Photoshop. The cat’s head belonged to a Chinese cat named Guapi, also known as MelonPi, while the body came from a stock photo of a barn owl. MelonPi had been adopted in 2011 and is now a senior cat.

Because Meowl looks remarkably similar to the uncanny animal hybrids commonly produced by modern text-to-image AI, younger Gen Z plus Gen Alpha users began labeling it AI slop or modern brainrot. The irony quickly became obvious to older internet users, who recognized the image as a relic from an era when bizarre internet pictures were manually edited rather than generated through prompts.

The meme's resurgence exposed what many described as digital amnesia, as people raised on an AI-saturated internet assume that any surreal image must have been generated by AI. For longtime internet users, defending Meowl has become about more than one strange cat-owl. It represents an older kind of internet chaos where creating something bizarre required a person, a copy of Photoshop, plus an absurd sense of humor.
