This one really resonated with me. I thought it would be fun to take a look at what you have tried with your dogs and what they have loved/liked vs disliked. I will go first.

Taken - LOVES anything that involves Wayne. He also loves agility, although we no longer compete and he jumps 12" bars due to a health issue. Trick training is very high on his list of loves, so is fitness training. He also really loves walks in the woods with his friends (Erp and Bugaboo) and brothers 💕 He also likes to swim. We tried sheep herding a couple of times and he was afraid of the sheep. Could we have worked through it, probably, but why? He was clearly uncomfortable.

Surprise - a workaholic, he is up for anything, anytime!! Agility and sheep herding are his faves! With him, I try to make sure to build some downtime and decompression into his days. He is TERRIBLE at dock diving IYKYK 🤣🤣

Munchie - LOVES cuddles, ripping through the woods on walks with or without his buddies, agility (as long as I don't make it too hard), sheep herding, fitness. We are getting better at trick training. Haven't found anything that he isn't willing to try 🤷‍♀️

—and that’s okay.

It’s easy to get caught up in goals, titles, and what we want our dogs to LOVE. But the truth is, our dogs don’t share those ambitions—they share us. And what they need most is to feel safe, understood, and confident in what they’re being asked to do.

When a dog is showing you a lack of joy, that’s not a training problem to push through—it’s feedback you need to listen to. Yes sometimes it is a training issue but sometimes dogs just don’t have the passion for something like we hoped they would.

Forcing a dog into a sport to meet human goals doesn’t build a stronger team. It chips away at trust and relationship.

The best teams aren’t the ones chasing ribbons at any cost—𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫.

Pay attention to what your dog is telling you.

Adjust the plan.

Just because a dog loves to swim …doesn’t mean they want to be dock dog

Just because a dog loves a tennis ball… doesn’t mean they need to do flyball

Just because a dog jumps on the couch… doesn’t mean they need to do agility
