We’re encouraged to see continued progress in reducing the use of seclusion rooms in Edmonton Public Schools.

This reflects strong leadership by trustees in demanding public reporting and meaningful investment by administration in training staff in safer, evidence-based alternatives.

That said, seclusion - the involuntary isolation of a student in a space they cannot leave - and physical restraints are not teaching strategies and they can cause harm, especially for students with intellectual disabilities.

While seclusion room use is declining, the use of physical restraint has increased and remains a serious concern. That tells us progress is uneven, and harmful practices are still too common. Inclusion Alberta calls for a full provincial ban on seclusion and for physical restraint to be permitted only in crisis situations to prevent imminent risk of serious physical harm.

The progress being made is significant. But the goal must remain clear: No child should be subjected to seclusion or restraint in school.

CBC is investigating the experience of families on waitlists for the Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program as well as families benefiting from FSCD supports here in Alberta.

This is an important opportunity to help build a clearer picture of how access to supports and barriers to access are affecting families, and to ensure these experiences are better understood.

If you are interested in sharing your experience with the CBC, we would encourage you to fill out the CBC's short survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfmMs0MBp0c2YLv2hnF-qhFIZ48RmCbYDLFh98z1lYkDYZSMg/viewform?usp=header

Congratulations to Northwestern Polytechnic Business Administration student Kaylee, who is supported by Inclusion Alberta’s Inclusive Post-Secondary Education initiative, on being recognized for her tremendous contributions to campus outside the classroom!

Kaylee was hired as a Student Ambassador and was recently elected as a school councillor. These achievements reflect what’s possible when individuals with intellectual disabilities are included in post-secondary education, expectations are high and supports are thoughtful.
This is what inclusion looks like at scale—students contributing, leading, and shaping their futures, while campuses and communities become stronger because of it.

Learn more about what’s possible with inclusive post-secondary education: https://inclusionalberta.org/what-we-do/inclusive-post-secondary/

For Kaylee, becoming a student ambassador has been about more than helping at events. It has been a chance to discover something about herself.

“I actually want to be more of a leader, and I can see myself doing this.”

As a Business Administration student at NWP, Kaylee stepped into the ambassador role to connect more with her community, as well as with students, staff, and faculty. Since then, she has helped plan events, welcomed students and families on tours, and found real meaning in being part of those experiences.

Along the way, she has grown in confidence, learned the value of being prepared, and started to see leadership as an important part of her future.

What makes Kaylee’s story stand out is how involvement outside the classroom can help students build skills, form connections, and grow into new possibilities.
