Sadly, this type of victim blaming leads to survivors feeling ashamed and scared to speak out about their experiences. It also means that perpetrators often go unpunished and can continue to abuse others in the future. This victim-blaming culture can have devastating consequences on the mental health and well-being of those affected by this form of abuse. It is essential to recognize the importance of believing survivors and providing them with support to ensure their healing process begins in an environment free from judgment and stigma. Every year, thousands of survivors of clergy sexual abuse and misconduct suffer in silence, many without knowing where to turn for help because too long, victims have been ignored and or silenced.
